賊は大きなことはいうものの、やっぱりピストルをきみ悪がっているのでした。それを食事の代価としてとりあげるとは、うまいことを思いついたものです。
The thief was acting big but in realty he was scared of the gun. It was a good idea to take the gun away in return for the meal.
小林少年は、やがて救いだされることを信じていましたから、それまで食事をがまんするのは、なんでもないのですが、あまり平気な顔をしていて、相手にうたがいをおこさせてはまずいと考えました。それに、どうせピストルなどに、もう用事はないのです。
Kobayashi believed that he would be rescued soon so it was nothing for him to go without meal. Still he thought it was no good that if his opponent get suspicious because of his being all right. Plus, he didn't need the gun anymore.

わざと、くやしそうに答えました。
"I'm afraid I have to accept your offer. I'm really hungry."
He said it with vexation intentionally.
賊は、それをお芝居とは心づかず、計略が図にあたったとばかり、とくいになって、
「ウフフフ……、さすがの少年探偵も、ひもじさにはかなわないとみえるね。よしよし、今すぐに食事をおろしてやるからね。」
といいながら、おとし穴をしめて姿を消しましたが、やがて、何かコックに命じているらしい声が、天井から、かすかに聞こえてきました。
The thief didn't see it was an act and believed that things were going as he liked, he said triumphantly.
"He, he. Even a famous detective boy can't stand against hunger. Well, well, I'll give you the meal soon."
And he disappeared. Soon his order to the cook was heard from the upstairs.
あんがい食事の用意がてまどって、ふたたび二十面相が、おとし穴をひらいて顔を出したのは、それから二十分もたったころでした。
It took more time than he thought, it was twenty minutes later that Twenty Faces opened the lid showing himself.
