美術城

Art Castle

　伊豆いず半島の修善寺しゅぜんじ温泉から四キロほど南、下田しもだ街道にそった山の中に、谷口村たにぐちむらというごくさびしい村があります。その村はずれの森の中に、みょうなお城のようないかめしいやしきが建っているのです。

About 4 kilometer south of Shuzenji Onsen in Ize peninsula, there is an isolated village Taniguchi in mountain along Simoda street. An odd mansion like a Japanese castle was in the woods outskirt of the village.

　まわりには高い土塀をきずき、土塀の上には、ずっと先のするどくとがった鉄棒を、まるで針の山みたいに植えつけ、土塀の内がわには、四メートル幅ほどのみぞが、ぐるっととりまいていて、青々とした水が流れています。深さも背がたたぬほど深いのです。これはみな人をよせつけぬための用心です。たとい針の山の土塀を乗りこえても、その中に、とてもとびこすことのできないお堀が、堀りめぐらしてあるというわけです。

It was surrouded by tall mud walls with sharp iron spikes like mountain of needles and inside of these walls there was 4 meter wide moat with blue water circulation. It was deeper than people's hight. These are precaution made to keep out evryone. Even if someone manage to go over the mountain of needles, there was moat no one can jump over.

　そして、そのまんなかには、天守閣てんしゅかくこそありませんが、全体に厚い白壁造りの、窓の小さい、まるで土蔵をいくつもよせあつめたような、大きな建物が建っています。
　その付近の人たちは、この建物を「日下部くさかべのお城」と呼んでいますが、むろんほんとうのお城ではありません。こんな小さな村にお城などあるはずはないのです。

In the middle of this premise, there is a big building with white walls and small windows and it is made from many storehouses. It didn't have a castle tower though the village people called it 'Castle of Kusakabe.' Of course it's not real castle. There is no way this tiny village has a castle.

　では、このばかばかしく用心堅固ようじんけんごな建物は、いったい何者の住まいでしょう。警察のなかった戦国時代ならば知らぬこと、今の世に、どんなお金持だって、これほど用心ぶかい邸宅に住んでいるものはありますまい。

 Then whose residence is this ridiculously secured buildings? If it was war time there was no Police system but today there is no rich people living in this secured house.

「あすこには、いったいどういう人が住んでいるのですか。」
　旅のものなどがたずねますと、村人はきまったように、こんなふうに答えます。

"Who is living in that house?"
When the traveller ask, the village people's anwer is always like this.

「あれですかい。ありゃ、日下部くさかべの気ち◯い旦那のお城だよ。宝物をぬすまれるのがこわいといってね、村ともつきあいをしねえかわり者ですよ。」

"That house? It's a castle of a crazy man, Kusakabe. He is weirdo, too afraid of being stolen his tresures to go along with us."

　日下部家は、先祖代々、この地方の大地主だったのですが、今の左門さもん氏の代になって、広大な地所じしょもすっかり人手にわたってしまって、残るのはお城のような邸宅と、その中に所蔵されているおびただしい古名画こめいがばかりになってしまいました。

Ancestor of Kusakabes was a great land owner though current generation, Samon got lost all vast lands but only this castle-like mansion and numerous famous pictures stocked inside of it.

　左門老人は気ち◯いのような美術収集家だったのです。美術といってもおもに古代の名画で、雪舟せっしゅうとか探幽たんゆうとか、小学校の本にさえ名の出ている、古来の大名人の作は、ほとんどもれなく集まっているといってもいいほどでした。何百幅ぷくという絵の大部分が、国宝にもなるべき傑作ばかり、価格にしたら数十億円にもなろうといううわさでした。

Old Samon is crazy art collector. Mainly antique pictures, like Sesshu or Tanyu. It was like all famouse painter's art works you can see in the school art books are in his possession. Almost of some hundreds of pictures should be National tresures worth several billions.

　小林君によろしく伝えてくれたまえ。あれはじつにえらい子どもだ。ぼくはかわいくてしかたがないほどに思っている。だが、いくらかわいい小林君のためだって、ぼくの一身を犠牲にすることはできない。

 

 Say hi to Kobayashi, please. He is a really clever kid. I think I can adore him somohow. But however for him I can't sacrifice my poeple. 

 

勝利によっているあの子どもには気のどくだが、少々実世間の教訓をあたえてやったわけだ。子どものやせ腕でこの二十面相に敵対することは、もうあきらめたがよいと伝えてくれたまえ。これにこりないと、とんだことになるぞと、伝えてくれたまえ。

 

Sorry for that triumphant kid I gave him some trial in this real world. Tell him he sould give up fighting against this Twenty Faces with his thin arms.

 

ついでながら、警官諸公に、少しばかりぼくの計画をもらしておく。羽柴氏は少し気のどくになった。もうこれ以上なやますことはしない。じつをいうと、ぼくはあんな貧弱な美術室に、いつまでも執着しゅうちゃくしているわけにはいかないのだ。

 

En passant, I will reveal my plan little to you police people. I feel sorry for Hashiba. I won't bother him anymore. To tell you the truth I can't fixate on such a petty art room.

 

ぼくはいそがしい。じつは今、もっと大きなものに手をそめかけているのだ。それがどのような大事業であるかは、近日、諸君の耳にもたっすることだろう。では、そのうちまたゆっくりお目にかかろう。

　読者諸君、かくして二十面相と小林少年のたたかいは、ざんねんながら、けっきょく、怪盗の勝利に終わりました。しかも二十面相は、羽柴家の宝庫を貧弱とあざけり、大事業に手をそめているといばっています。彼の大事業とはいったい、何を意味するのでしょうか。こんどこそ、もう小林少年などの手におえないかもしれません。待たれるのは、明智小五郎の帰国です。それもあまり遠いことではありますまい。

My readers, thus the fight between Twenty Faces and Kobayashi ended with a victory for Twenty Faces. Not only that he ridiculed Hashiba's tresure and said he was on a bigger business now. What in the world is his big business? Now it may be something Kobayashi can't deal with. All they want is return of Akechi Kogorou. It wouldn't so long.

　ああ、名探偵明智小五郎と怪人二十面相の対立、知恵と知恵との一騎うち、その日が待ちどおしいではありませんか。

Oh, the confrontation between the great detective Akechi Kogorou and Twenty Faces, the single combat between wisdom and wisdom. How can we wait for it.
