中村係長は、それを聞くと、ハッと顔色をかえないでいられませんでした。
By hearing this the the chief Nakamura had gone pale.
「だまれッ、でたらめもいいかげんにしろ。そんなばかなことがあるものか。きさまが二十面相だということは、小林少年がちゃんと証明しているじゃないか。」
"Shut up! Rubish! It can't be possible. Kobayashi verified you were Twenty Faces."
「ワハハハ……、それがまちがっているんだから、お笑いぐさでさあ。あたしはね、べつになんにも悪いことをしたおぼえはねえ、ただのコックですよ。二十面相だかなんだか知らないが、十日ばかりまえ、あの家へやとわれたコックの虎吉ってもんですよ。なんなら、コックの親方のほうをしらべてくださりゃ、すぐわかることです。」

中村係長は、青ざめてこわばった顔で、無言のまま、はげしく卓上のベルをおしました。そして、警部が顔を出すと、けさ戸山ヶ原の廃屋を包囲した警官のうち、表口、裏口の見はり番をつとめた四人の警官に、すぐ来るようにと伝えさせたのです。
The chief Nakamura said nothing, push the botton on the table, his face still pale. When the inspector came he ordered to bring four policemen who were on the look of the both front and back door at the ruins in Toyamagahara this morning.
やがて、はいってきた四人の警官を、係長は、こわい顔でにらみつけました。
「こいつを逮捕していたとき、あの家から出ていったものはなかったかね。そいつは警官の服装をしていたかもしれないのだ。だれか見かけなかったかね。」
He gave a forbidding glare to four policemen who came in after a while.
"When we arrest this guy were there anyone came out form that house? It might be in pliceman's uniform. Didn't you all see anyone?"
その問いに応じて、ひとりの警官が答えました。
「警官ならばひとり出ていきましたよ。賊がつかまったから早く二階へ行けと、どなっておいて、ぼくらがあわてて階段のほうへかけだすのと反対に、その男は外へ走っていきました。」
In answer one of them said.
"There was one policeman got out. He yelled that the thief was caught so we sould go to the upstairs. As we rashed to the stairs the guy ran off."
「なぜ、それを今までだまっているんだ。だいいち、きみはその男の顔を見なかったのかね。いくら警官の制服を着ていたからって、顔を見れば、にせ者かどうかすぐわかるはずじゃないか。」
"Why haven't you said that. First of all, didn't you see the guy's face? Even though he was in the uniform you could tell if it was an inposter."
係長のひたいには、静脈がおそろしくふくれあがっています。
On the chief's forehead the veins were bulged painfully.
「それが、顔を見るひまがなかったんです。風のように走ってきて、風のようにとびだしていったものですから。しかし、ぼくはちょっとふしんに思ったので、きみはどこへ行くんだ、と声をかけました。するとその男は、電話だよ、係長のいいつけで電話をかけに行くんだよ、とさけびながら、走っていってしまいました。
"Because there was no time to see his face. He came like a wind and ran away like a wind. Still I got a little suspicious so I asked where he was going. The guy said, telephone. He ran away shouting the chief ordered him to make a phonecall.
電話ならば、これまで例がないこともないので、ぼくはそれ以上うたがいませんでした。それに、賊が、つかまってしまったのですから、かけだしていった警官のことなんかわすれてしまって、ついご報告しなかったのですよ。」
In that case it was not unusual. So I didn't have doubt anymore. Moreover we got the thief so I forgot about the runaway policeman. That's why I haven't reported it to you."
