Reader's Digest 9月号の英単語クイズ Word Powerは海に関係する単語でした。 相変わらず難しい単語が多くて、問題となった単語に覚えたい単語はありませんでしたが、例文の中に興味の湧く単語が幾つかありました。 今日取り上げるのは "dugong" を使った例文にありました。 "dugong" は人魚と間違えられた事があると聞いた事がありますが、沖縄の水族館で本物を見た時に、人魚と間違えた話は眉唾と思いました。 "dugong" の別名は "sea cow" だそうですが、こちらの方が大きな図体からしてあっていると思います。 さて、 "dugong" を使った例文です。

"dugong" は大きいけれどおとなしそうなので "mild mien" は柔和な性格のような意味と推測しますが、辞書で確認します。
