In the middle of Izu peninsula, there is a so-called symbol mountain of Izunokuni city, named Katsuragi-yama mountain with the hight of 452m. It is right near the Jo-yama mountain and it is also the same volcanic neck mountain as Jo-yama montain, which is said to be formed 10 or 20 million years ago, when the Izu peninsula was in the bottom of the southern sea.
Near the center of Izu peninsula, there is a mountain named JO-YAMA. It is a rocky mountain with vertical rock wall at the top of the mountain. There are not so many bushes. There are not so many trees.
This vertical rock wall is said to have been created by magma solidifying along the vent of a volcano and is called Volcanic Neck. (see a copy of Izu Peninsula Geo Park Information Board)Millions of year ago, Izu peninsula was a volcanic island and this Jo-yama was one of the volcanoes.
There ia a river named Kano-gawa river streaming at the foot of Jo-yama mountain. On the bank of the river there is a walking road named Mr.Nagashima Shigeo running road. It is a beautiful view around there
There is a giant cedar tree in Izu city (central Izu peninsular). The name is Taro-sugi(Taro is a typical male's name in Japan. Sugi is a cedar tree in Japanese). Its hight is 53m and length of the trunk is about 10m.The age is about 400 years old. It is a natural monument of Shizuoka prefecture.
