『日本書紀』垂仁天皇 8
廿三年秋九月丙寅朔丁卯、詔群卿曰「譽津別王、是生年既卅、髯鬚八掬、猶泣如兒、常不言、何由矣。」因有司而議之。冬十月乙丑朔壬申、天皇立於大殿前、譽津別皇子侍之。時有鳴鵠、度大虛、皇子仰觀鵠曰「是何物耶。」天皇則知皇子見鵠得言而喜之、詔左右曰「誰能捕是鳥獻之。」於是、鳥取造祖天湯河板舉奏言「臣必捕而獻。」卽天皇勅湯河板舉板舉、此云拕儺曰「汝獻是鳥、必敦賞矣。」時湯河板舉、遠望鵠飛之方、追尋詣出雲而捕獲。或曰、得于但馬國。
十一月甲午朔乙未、湯河板舉、獻鵠也。譽津別命、弄是鵠、遂得言語。由是、以敦賞湯河板舉、則賜姓而曰鳥取造、因亦定鳥取部・鳥養部・譽津部。

In the autumn of the 23rd year, on the first day of the ninth month, the Emperor issued an edict to the court nobles. He said, ‘Homutsuwake no Mikoto has reached the age of thirty, and his beard has grown eight inches long, yet he only cries like a child and does not speak. What could be the reason for this?’ The officials then debated this matter.
In the winter, on the eighth day of the tenth month, standing in front of the great hall, the Emperor was served by Prince Homutswake. At that moment, a “kugui " (swan) flew in the sky. Looking up, the Prince saw the kugui and asked, ‘What is that?’ The Emperor, learning that the Prince had spoken upon seeing the kugui, was delighted. He then decreed to his close attendants, ‘Someone catch this bird and present it to me.’
Thereupon, Amenoyukawatana, ancestor of the Bird Catching Chief, declared, ‘I shall certainly catch it.’ The Emperor instructed Amenoyukawatana, ‘If you capture this bird, I will surely reward you generously.’ Amenoyukawatana followed the direction in which the swan had flown, went all the way to Izumo, and finally caught it. Some say it was caught in Tajima Province.
On the second day of the eleventh month, Amenoyukawatana presented the swan. Homutswake no Mikoto played with the swan and eventually became able to speak. As a result, Amenoyukawatana was rewarded and given the surname, and was named ‘Bird Catching Chief.’ Consequently, the Toritori Clan, the Torikai Clan, and the Homutsu Clan were established.
≪この英文の和訳≫
二十三年の秋、九月の初日に、天皇は群卿に詔（みことのり）をされました。「誉津別命（ほむつわけのみこと）は、三十歳、髭（ひげ）が八掬（はっしゅく）も伸びているが、まだ幼児のように泣くばかりで、話さない。これはどういうわけだろうか」と。そして、官人たちはこのことについて議論しました。
冬、十月の八日、天皇は大殿の前に立ち、誉津別（ほむつわけ）皇子（おうじ）は天皇の傍（そば）に仕えていました。その時、白鳥(しらとり)の＊鵠（くぐい 白鳥）が空を飛びました。皇子は空を見上げて、鵠（くぐい）を見て『あれは何でしょうか』と言いました。天皇は、皇子が鵠（くぐい）を見て言葉を得たことを知り、喜ばれました。そして、近臣に詔（みことのり）して「誰かこの鳥を捕らえて献上せよ』と言われました。

そこで、鳥取造（とりとりのみやつこ）の祖先である天湯河板挙（あめのゆかわたな）が「私が必ず捕らえましょう」と言いました。天皇は天湯河板挙（あめのゆかわたな）に命じて「お前がこの鳥を捕えたら、必ず豊富な褒美を与えよう」と言われました。天湯河板挙（あめのゆかわたな）は、鵠（くぐい）が飛んで行った方向を追い、出雲まで行き、ついに捕えました。ある人は「但馬国（たじまのくに）で捕えた」とも言います。
十一月の二日、天湯河板挙（あめのゆかわたな）は鵠（くぐい）を献上しました。誉津別命（ほむつわけのみこと）は、この鵠（くぐい）と遊び、やがて話すことができるようになりました。これにより、天湯河板挙（あめのゆかわたな）には褒美が与えられ、姓を授けられ、「＊鳥取造（とりとりのみやつこ）」と名付けられました。そして、鳥取部（とりとりべ）、鳥養部（とりかいべ）、誉津部（ほむつべ）が定められました。
＊鳥取「とっとり」とか「ととり」とか言われることもあるが、元々は「鳥を取る者」「とりとり」だろうと思われる
