故、火照命者、爲海佐知毘古此四字以音、下效此而、取鰭廣物・鰭狹物、火遠理命者、爲山佐知毘古而、取毛麤物・毛柔物。爾火遠理命、謂其兄火照命「各相易佐知欲用。」三度雖乞、不許、然遂纔得相易。爾火遠理命、以海佐知釣魚、都不得一魚、亦其鉤失海。於是、其兄火照命、乞其鉤曰「山佐知母、己之佐知佐知、海佐知母、己之佐知佐知。今各謂返佐知。」＊之時佐知二字以音、其弟火遠理命答曰「汝鉤者、釣魚不得一魚、遂失海。」然其兄強乞徵、故其弟、破御佩之十拳劒、作五百鉤、雖償不取、亦作一千鉤、雖償不受、云「猶欲得其正本鉤」

One of the sons of Ninigi-no-Mikoto, named Hoderi-no-Mikoto, was known as Umisachihiko, who specialized in catching various fish from the sea, while the other son, Hoori-no-Mikoto, was called Yamasachihiko and excelled in hunting mountain-dwelling birds and animals. One day, Hoori proposed to his elder brother, Hoderi, “Let us exchange our tools and try to use them.” Hoori made this request three times, but initially, Hoderi refused. However, he eventually agreed to the exchange.
When Hoori, now in possession of Hoderi’s fishing tools, tried to catch fish, he couldn’t catch a single one and even lost his fishing hook in the sea. At that moment, Hoderi requested Hoori’s hook, saying, “Yamasachihiko is also my fortune, and Umisachihiko is also your fortune. Let us return each other’s fortunes.” In response, he had caught no fish and lost the hook in the sea. Despite this, Hoderi persistently requested the hook. As a result, Hoori reluctantly broke his treasured sword into ten pieces and made five hundred hooks as compensation, but Hoderi refused to accept them. Hoori then made one thousand hooks as further compensation, but Hoderi still did not accept them, stating, “I still want the original hook.”

ニニギの御子であるホデリの命は海幸彦として知られ、海で様々な魚を捕ることに長けていました。その一方、ホヲリの命は山幸彦として知られ、山で鳥や獣を狩るのが得意でした。ある日、ホヲリは兄であるホデリに道具を交換して使ってみようと提案しました。ホヲリはこの要求を3度も繰り返しましたが、最初はホデリが断りました。しかし最後になってようやく交換に応じました。
ホヲリはホデリの釣り道具を手に入れましたが、魚を釣ることができず、ついには釣り針を海で失ってしまいました。その時、ホデリはホヲリに釣り針を返してほしいと頼みました。「山幸彦も自分の幸(さち)であり、海幸彦も自分の幸だ〔山で得たものも自分のものだ。海で得たものも自分のものだ〕。やはりお互いの幸(さち)を返えそう」と言いました。しかし、ホヲリは自分が魚を一匹も捕れず、釣り針を海で失ったことを伝えました。それでもホデリは頑として釣り針を求め続けました。ホヲリはためらいながらも、大切な剣を10個に分割し、500本の釣り針を作りましたが、ホデリは受け取ろうとしませんでした。さらにホヲリは1000本の釣り針を作りましたが、ホデリはそれも受け取らず、「やはり元の釣り針が欲しい」と言いました。
