「To make a long story short - I had a Monday business meeting in Souja (near Okayama) with a visitor from Mexico. We met with the interpreter, Hiroko, at the hotel in Okayama for breakfast. Due to Monday morning internal meeting, the company we were visiting had asked us to come after lunch.

We finished preparation discussions with the interpreter about 9:00 so we had lots of time before the meeting. I suggested we go to Kurashiki (between Okayama and Souja) and visit the Ohara Art Museum. Previous visitors from Mexico had enjoyed Ohara very much. We took the train to Kurashiki and walked to the Museum. But....it is closed Mondays.

So, Hiroko, who lives in Okayama and does a lot of interpreting in the area, said she had recently interpreted for an architectural conference in Kurashiki and the group had visited several building refurbished by a local architect - in the tradition Japanese style. She said one of the places was a rice warehouse (kura) that had been converted into a coffee shop named Hashimaya.

So, we decided to go there and have coffee. It was a beautiful building and there was an exhibit of pottery and pictures - very stunning. On closer inspection the pictures closely matched the various pieces of pottery. Hiroko, recognized (she knows everybody) the potter sitting at the counter having coffee. We asked him if he did both the pottery and the paintings/prints (hard to tell which..) and he said "no" that he collaborated with an artist from Spain - Marta. And, he said, she is here and will be coming in a few minutes.

In the meantime, I had asked if I could play the piano (beautiful Yamaha) and was doing so. Hiroko and the gentleman from Mexico were drinking coffee at a table near by....when, ta-taa...in comes Marta in a Edo period kimono.(the owner of the coffee shop is a gofukuya) Immediately, we could all feel her energy. Soon she was talking with my Mexican friend in Spanish, with Hiroko in Japanese and with me in English. Amazing.

We discovered that we both liked studying kanji and I offered to give her a copy of my kanji learning program. That was the start of our friendship. 」
