「それにはまた、じつに大胆不敵な手段が、用意してあったのです。ゆうべの三人の宿直員というのは、けさ、それぞれ自宅へ帰ったのでしょう。ひとつその三人の自宅へ電話をかけて、主人が帰ったかどうか、たしかめてみてください。」

”For that he got a very audacious preparation. The three people on night duty on last night might have gone home this morning. Now, please make sure if they have come back home."

　明智がまたしてもみょうなことをいいだしました。三人の宿直員は、だれも電話をもっていませんでしたが、それぞれ付近の商家に呼びだし電話が通じますので、館員のひとりがさっそく電話をかけてみますと、三人が三人とも、ゆうべ以来まだ自宅へ帰っていないことがわかりました。宿直員たちの家庭では、こんな事件のさいですから、きょうも、とめおかれているのだろうと、安心していたというのです。

Akechi started saying an odd thing. None of the three men didn't have the phone so one of the museum staffs called the retailers in their neighbors to find out the all three of them hadn't gone home yet. Their families weren't concerned about it guessing they got to stay at the museum for this incident.

「三人が博物館を出てからもう八―九時間もたつのに、そろいもそろって、まだ帰宅していないというのは、少しおかしいじゃありませんか。ゆうべ徹夜をした、つかれたからだで、まさか遊びまわっているわけではありますまい。なぜ三人が帰らなかったのか、この意味がおわかりですか。」

"Isn't it weird that they have left this museum eight or nine hours ago and yet they are not at home? There is no way they are hanging around after they got exhausted by staying up all night. Do you understand what does it mean, they didn't go home?"

　明智は、また一同の顔をグルッと見まわしておいて、ことばをつづけました。
「ほかでもありません。三人は、二十面相一味のために誘かいされたのです。」

Akechi looked around everyone again, and continued.
"It's no other than that the three of them have been abducted by Twenty Faces."

「え、誘かいされた？　それはいつのことです。」
　館員がさけびました。

"What? Abducted? When is it?"
The curator cried out.

「きのうの夕方、三人がそれぞれ夜勤をつとめるために、自宅を出たところをです。」
「え、え、きのうの夕方ですって？　じゃあ、ゆうべここにいた三人は……。」

"Last evening, when they left their homes for the night duty."
"What? Last evening? Then the three of them in here last night..."

「二十面相の部下でした。ほんとうの宿直員は賊の巣くつへおしこめておいて、そのかわりに賊の部下が博物館の宿直をつとめたのです。なんてわけのない話でしょう。賊が見はり番をつとめたんですから、にせものの美術品のおきかえなんて、じつに造作ぞうさもないことだったのです。

"They were Twenty Faces' subordinates. They played the staffs on night duty with the genuine persons incarcerated in their den. How easy is that. WIth the gang themselves guarding here, it was easy enough for the too replace them with the counterfeits.

　みなさん、これが二十面相のやり口ですよ。人間わざではできそうもないことを、ちょっとした頭のはたらきで、やすやすとやってのけるのです。」

Everyone, this is the way of Twenty Faces. He can do things that no human can do with his little idea.

　明智探偵は、二十面相の頭のよさをほめあげるようにいって、ずっと手をつないでいた館長北小路老博士の手首を痛いほど、ギュッとにぎりしめました。

The detective Akechi said as if he was praising Twenty Faces smartness and grasp the list of the old doctor Kitaouji hard enough to make him feel pain.

「ウーン、あれが賊の手下だったのか。うかつじゃった。わしがうかつじゃった。」　老博士は白髯をふるわせて、さもくやしそうにうめきました。両眼がつりあがって、顔がまっさおになって、見るも恐ろしい憤怒ふんぬの形相ぎょうそうです。

"Uh, they were his subordinates. How sloppy of me. I was careless."
The old doctor moaned in vexation with his beard trembling. With his eyebrows raised, face in red he looked terribly furious.

しかし、老博士は、三人のにせ者をどうして見やぶることができなかったのでしょう。二十面相なら知らぬこと、手下の三人が、館長にもわからないほどじょうずに変装していたなんて、考えられないことです。北小路博士ともあろう人が、そんなにやすやすとだまされるなんて、少しおかしくはないでしょうか。

Still, why the old doctor couldn't find they were the impostors. They weren't Twenty Faces, it's unthinkable they could deceive the director by their disguise. The doctor Kitaouji, of all men was decieved so easily, isn't it a little strange?

　明智がさっそくたずねますと、警官は総監の前だものですから、ひどくあらたまって、直立不動の姿勢で、「そうです。」と答えました。

Akechi inquired promptly. The policeman answered 'yes' standing straight and stiff because he was in presence of the chief of Metropolitan Plice.

「では、きょう正午から一時ごろまでのあいだに、トラックが一台、裏門を出ていくのを見たでしょう。」

"Then you must have seen a truck go out from the back gate from the noon to 1 P.M. today."

「はあ、おたずねになっているのは、あのとりこわし家屋の古材木をつんだトラックのことではありませんか。」

"Well, do you mean the truck loaded with the old timbers from the house under demolition?"

「そうです。」
「それならば、たしかに通りました。」
　警官は、あの古材木がどうしたんです、といわぬばかりの顔つきです。

"Yes."
"Then I saw it."
His expression was like saying so what.

「みなさんおわかりになりましたか。これが賊の魔法の種です。うわべは古材木ばかりのように見えていて、そのじつ、あのトラックには、盗難の美術品がぜんぶつみこんであったのですよ。」

"Everyone, do you see it? This is the trick of his magic. The truth is that that truck was loaded with the stolen items under those old timbers."

　明智は一同を見まわして、おどろくべき種明たねあかしをしました。
「すると、とりこわしの人夫の中に賊の手下てしたがまじっていたというのですか。」
　中村係長は、目をパチパチさせて聞きかえしました。

Akechi looked around the people and revealed the unbelievable trick.
"Then, were there his gang amongst the demolision workers?"
The chief Nakamura asked brinking his eyes.

「そうです。まじっていたのではなくて、人夫ぜんぶが賊の手下だったのかもしれません。二十面相は早くから万端ばんたんの準備をととのえて、この絶好の機会を待っていたのです。

"That's right. Or all the workers might be the thief's subordinates. Twenty Faces had been waiting for this perfect chance with all the preparation done."

家屋のとりこわしは、たしか十二月五日からはじまったのでしたね。その着手期日は、三月も四月もまえから、関係者にはわかっていたはずです。そうすれば、十日ごろはちょうど古材木運びだしの日にあたるじゃありませんか。

The demolition was started from December 5th, right? The commencement day must have been known by the wrecker personnel three of four months before. 

予告の十二月十日という日づけは、こういうところから割りだされたのです。また午後四時というのは、ほんものの美術品がちゃんと賊の巣くつに運ばれてしまって、もうにせものがわかってもさしつかえないという時間を意味したのです。」

The date, December 10th was calculated by these thing. And the time, 4 P.M. was the time that the authentic works had been brought to the thief's nest so there was no problem if the counterfeits were turned up."

　ああ、なんという用意周到な計画だったでしょう。二十面相の魔術には、いつのときも、一般の人の思いもおよばないしかけが、ちゃんと用意してあるのです。

Oh, how well-prepared plan. Twenty Faces' magics always have tricks no general people think of.

「しかし明智君、たとえ、そんな方法で運びだすことはできたとしても、まだ賊が、どうして陳列室へはいったか、いつのまに、ほんものとにせものとおきかえたかというなぞは、解けませんね。」

"Still, Mr. Akechi, even if they could bring them out with that way, we don't know how they got into the gallery, or, when they replaced the real things with the counterfeits."

　刑事部長が明智のことばを信じかねるようにいうのです。
「おきかえは、きのうの夜ふけにやりました。」
　明智は、何もかも知りぬいているような口調で語りつづけます。

The chief detective said with some doubt about Akechi's word.
"They replaced them late last night."
Akechi continued as if he knew everything.

「賊の部下が化けた人夫たちは、毎日ここへ仕事へ来るときに、にせものの美術品を少しずつ運びいれました。絵は細く巻いて、仏像は分解して手、足、首、胴とべつべつにむしろ包みにして、大工道具といっしょに持ちこめば、うたがわれる気づかいはありません。

"The wreckers played by his subordinates came to work here everyday bringing the counterfeits little by little. The paintings rolled up, the statues disassembled, they could bring them by rolls, hands, arms, heads and torsos in each percels with the carpenter's tools. They didn't have to be suspected.

みな、ぬすみだされることばかり警戒しているのですから、持ちこむものに注意なんかしませんからね。そして、贋造品がんぞうひんはぜんぶ、古材木の山におおいかくされて、ゆうべの夜ふけを待っていたのです。」

Everyone was worried about stealing but bringing in. Those counterfeits had been waiting for the deep night covered under the old timbers."

「だが、それをだれが陳列室へおきかえたのです。人夫たちは、みな夕方帰ってしまうじゃありませんか。たとえそのうち何人かが、こっそり構内にのこっていたとしても、どうして陳列室へはいることができます。夜はすっかり出入り口がとざされてしまうのです。

"But who put those in the gallery. The wreckers go home every evening. Even if some of them remaind how could they get in the gallery? The all entrances are shut completely in the night time.

館内には、館長さんや三人の宿直員が、一睡いっすいもしないで見はっていました。その人たちに知れぬように、あのたくさんの品物をおきかえるなんて、まったく不可能じゃありませんか。」
　館員のひとりが、じつにもっともな質問をしました。

The director and the three people on the night duty were watching here all night. It's impossible to switch so many things without them notice it."
One of the museum staffs asked a justifiable question.

Disclosure of trick

「ですが、わたしどもには、どうもわけがわからないのです。あれだけの美術品を、たった一日のあいだに、にせものとすりかえるなんて、人間わざでできることではありません。まあ、にせもののほうは、まえまえから、美術学生かなんかに化けて観覧に来て、絵図を書いていけば、模造できないことはありませんけれど、それをどうして入れかえたかが問題です。まったくわけがわかりません。」

"But we don't understand. Replacing that many precious art works by the counterfeits in one day, it can't be done by a human. The counterfeits can be made by someone coming here as an art student or something to depict them. But how they switch those things. I'm totally at a loss."

　館員は、まるでむずかしい数学の問題にでもぶっつかったようにしきりに小首をかたむけています。

The curator kept tilting his head as if he bumped into the most difficult math problem.

「きのうの夕方までは、たしかに、みんなほんものだったのだね。」
　総監がたずねますと、館員たちは、確信にみちたようすで、
「それはもう、けっしてまちがいございません。」と、口をそろえて答えるのです。

"Are you sure they were really authentic until last evening?"
When the chief of P.M. asked all the museum staffs answered confidently in chorus.
"We are sure of it, there is no mistake about it."

「すると、おそらくゆうべの夜中あたりに、どうかして二十面相一味のものが、ここへしのびこんだのかもしれんね。」

"Then maybe the gang of Twenty Faces sneaked in here late last night."

「いや、そんなことは、できるはずがございません。表門も裏門も塀のまわりも、大ぜいのおまわりさんが、徹夜で見はっていてくだすったのです。館内にも、ゆうべは館長さんと三人の宿直員が、ずっとつめきっていたのです。そのげんじゅうな見はりの中をくぐって、あのおびただしい美術品を、どうして持ちこんだり、運びだしたりできるものですか。まったく人間わざではできないことです。」
　館員は、あくまでいいました。

"No, that's impossible. So many policemen guarded the front and back gates and around the walls all night. There were the director and the three night duty staffs in here. How can anyone go through in this tight security and bring in and out of those numerous number of art works. It's not a human work."
The curator insisted.

「わからん、じつにふしぎだ……。しかし、二十面相のやつ、広言したほど男らしくもなかったですね。あらかじめ、にせものとおきかえておいて、さあ、このとおりぬすみましたというのじゃ、十日の午後四時なんて予告は、まったく無意味ですからね。」
　刑事部長は、くやしまぎれに、そんなことでも言ってみないではいられませんでした。

"I don't get it. It's really strange. Still, Twenty Faces was not manly like he declared. Switched them beforehand and declared he has taken them, it doesn't meet his anouncement that he steals at tenth 4 P. M.. It was meaningless."

「ところが、けっして無意味ではなかったのです。」
　明智小五郎が、まるで二十面相を弁護でもするようにいいました。彼は老館長北小路博士と、さも仲よしのように、ずっと、さいぜんから手をにぎりあったままなのです。

"But no, it wasn't meaningless."
Kogorou Akechi said as if he was defending Twenty Faces. He was still holding the hand of the old director Kitaouji as if they were freinds.

「ホウ、無意味でなかったって？　それはいったい、どういうことなんだね。」
　警視総監が、ふしぎそうに名探偵の顔を見て、たずねました。

”Ow, it wasn't meaningless? What do you mean by that?"
The chief of M.P. looked at the detective's face amazingly and asked.

「あれをごらんください。」
　すると明智は窓に近づいて、博物館の裏手のあき地を指さしました。
「ぼくが十二月十日ごろまで、待たなければならなかった秘密というのは、あれなのです。」

"Look at that."
Akechi went to the window and pointed the field on the bakc of the museum.
"The secret I had to wait until December 10th is that thing."

　そのあき地には、博物館創立当時からの、古い日本建ての館員宿直室が建っていたのですが、それが不用になって、数日前から、家屋かおくのとりこわしをはじめ、もうほとんど、とりこわしも終わって、古材木や、屋根がわらなどが、あっちこっちにつみあげてあるのです。

There used to be an old Japanese style house for the night dutys. But it became unnecessary so they started to destroy the house, now it was almist done. There were just old timbers or ceilings piled up here and there.

「古家をとりこわしたんだね。しかし、あれと二十面相の事件と、いったい、なんの関係があるんです。」
　刑事部長は、びっくりしたように明智を見ました。

"Destroied old house. What does it to do with this Twenty Faces case?"
The chief detective looked at Akechi in surprise.

「どんな関係があるか、じきわかりますよ……。どなたか、お手数ですが、中にいる中村警部に、きょう昼ごろ裏門の番をしていた警官をつれて、いそいでここへ来てくれるように、お伝えくださいませんか。」

"You will see it soon. Someone, please, ask the chief Nakamura to bring the policeman soon who was guarding the back gate at around noon."

　明智のさしずに、館員のひとりが、何かわけがわからぬながら、大急ぎで階下へおりていきましたが、まもなく中村捜査係長とひとりの警官をともなって帰ってきました。
「きみが、昼ごろ裏門のところにいた方ですか。」

One of the staff answered Akechis order, hurried to the downstairs not knowing what was goin on and soon came back with the chief Nakamura and one policeman.
"Are you the one standing at the back gate at around noon?"

　さいぜんの館員は、明智のことばの意味をさとったのか、ツカツカとその棚の前に近づいて、ガラスに顔をくっつけるようにして、中にかけならべた黒ずんだ仏画を凝視ぎょうししました。そして、たちまちさけびだすのでした。

The curator seemed like understood what Akechi meant, got close to the glass of the showcase, stared at the dark Buddist paintings on the wall. Soon he started shouting.

「アッ、これも、これも、あれも、館長、館長、この中の絵は、みんなにせものです。一つ残らずにせものです。」

"Oh! This, and this, and that one too, Director, Director, all of these paintings are fake. They all are counterfeit."

「ほかの棚をしらべてくれたまえ。早く、早く。」
　刑事部長のことばを待つまでもなく、三人の館員は、口々に何かわめきながら、気ちがいのように陳列棚から陳列棚へと、のぞきまわりました。

"Check other cases, now, now."
Before the chief detective said that other three staffs went around from one showcase to another crying out something frantically.

「にせものです。めぼしい美術品は、どれもこれも、すっかり模造品です。」

"They are fake. The notable art works are counterfeit altogether."

　それから、彼らはころがるように、階下の陳列場へおりていきましたが、しばらくして、もとの二階へもどってきたときには、館員の人数は、十人以上にふえていました。そして、だれもかれも、もうまっかになって憤慨しているのです。

Then they went to check the showcases in the downstairs. When they came back to the second floor the number of the museum staffs increased to more than ten. Every one of them were red in fury.

「下も同じことです。のこっているのはつまらないものばかりです。貴重品という貴重品は、すっかりにせものです……。しかし、館長、今もみんなと話したのですが、じつにふしぎというほかはありません。きのうまでは、たしかに、模造品なんて一つもなかったのです。それぞれ受持のものが、その点は自信をもって断言しています。それが、たった一日のうちに、大小百何点という美術品が、まるで魔法のように、にせものにかわってしまったのです。」

"It's the same in the downstairs. Remained ones are trifles. All precious things are fake. But, Director, we talked about this, it's nothing but unreasonable. Surely there was no counterfeit in here  yesterday. Each staff in charge is declaring it. Then again, handreds of art works became counterfeit like a magic in one day."

　館員は、くやしさに地だんだをふむようにしてさけびました。
「明智君、われわれはまたしてもやつのために、まんまとやられたらしいね。」
　総監が、沈痛なおももちで名探偵をかえりみました。

The staff exclaimed almost stamping his feet in frustration.
"Mr. Akechi, it seemed we got defeated again."
Distressed, the chief of M.P. turned his head to the detective.

「そうです。博物館は、二十面相のために盗奪とうだつされたのです。それは、さいしょに申しあげたとおりです。」

"You are right. The museum have been attacked by Twenty Faces. I told you so."

　大ぜいの中で、明智だけは、少しもとりみだしたところもなく、口もとに微笑びしょうさえうかべているのでした。

Only Akechi wasn't upset at all, with even a smile at the corner of his mouth in commotion.

　そして、あまりの打撃に、立っている力もないかと見える老館長を、はげますように、しっかりその手をにぎっていました。

And he was holding tightly the hand of the old director who got so weak by the greatest shock.

「明智君、なにをする。おい、いけない。よさんか。」
　総監と刑事部長とが、声をそろえてどなりつけるのを聞きながして、明智はサッと陳列棚を飛びだすと、また、さいぜんのように老館長のそばへより、その手をにぎって、にこにこと笑っているのです。

"Mr. Akechi, what are you doing! Hey, no, stop!"
Parrying the chief of M.P and the chief detective's loud voice, Akechi jumped out of the showcase, went to the side of the old director and took his hand again smiling.

「おい、明智君いったい、どうしたというんだ。らんぼうにもほどがあるじゃないか。これは博物館の中でもいちばん貴重な国宝ばかりなんだぞ。」
　まっかになっておこった刑事部長は、両手をふりあげて、今にも明智につかみかからんばかりのありさまです。

"Hey, Mr. Akechi, what's wroing with you? You've gone too far. These are the most precious National Treasures in this museum."
Being crimson with fury, the chief detective was almost grab at Akechi with his both hands in the air.

「ハハハ……。これが国宝だってあなたの目はどこについているんです。よく見てください。今ぼくが折りとった仏像の傷口を、よくしらべてください。」

"Ha ha ha. Where are your eyes saying these are National Treasures. Look at them closely. Please check into the broken parts I just made."

　明智の確信にみちた口調に、刑事部長は、ハッとしたように、仏像に近づいて、その傷口をながめまわしました。

At Akechi's confident tone, the chief detective suddenly startled, got to the Budda statues and observed the broken parts.

　すると、どうでしょう。首をもがれ、手を折られたあとの傷口からは、外見の黒ずんだ古めかしい色あいとは似ても似つかない、まだなまなましい白い木口きぐちが、のぞいていたではありませんか。奈良時代の彫刻に、こんな新しい材料が使われているはずはありません。

To his surprise, he could see fresh white wood in those brokens neck or arms, not at all like an old blackish tone of antiques. There is no way this kind of new wood is used in the sculptures made in Nara period.

「すると、きみは、この仏像がにせものだというのか。」

"Then you mean, these statues are fake?"

「そうですとも、あなた方に、もう少し美術眼がありさえすれば、こんな傷口をこしらえてみるまでもなく、ひと目でにせものとわかったはずです。新しい木で模造品を作って、外から塗料をぬって古い仏像のように見せかけたのですよ。模造品専門の職人の手にかけさえすれば、わけなくできるのです。」
　明智は、こともなげに説明しました。

"Of course. If you had an eya for art a little more, you could tell it at once without marring them. He made these counterfeits using new wood and painted to be like old statues. It can be done easily by the counterfeiters."
Akechi explained casually.

「北小路さん、これはいったい、どうしたことでしょう。国立博物館の陳列品が、まっかなにせものだなんて……。」
　警視総監が老館長をなじるようにいいました。

"Mr. Kitaouji, what's going on. All art works in National Museum are conterfeit."
The chief of M.P. said like he was blaming the old director of museum.

「あきれました。あきれたことです。」
　明智に手をとられて、ぼうぜんとたたずんでいた老博士が、ろうばいしながら、てれかくしのように答えました。

"I'm shocked. This is shoking."
The old director who was standing in amazement with his hand in Akechi's hand answered hiding his embarrassment.

　そこへ、さわぎを聞きつけて、三人の館員があわただしくはいってきました。その中のひとりは、古代美術鑑定の専門家で、その方面の係長をつとめている人でしたが、こわれた仏像をひと目見ると、さすがにたちまち気づいてさけびました。

Hearing the uproar, three staffs came in hurriedly. One of them was a connoisseur of antiquities, working as a curator here. He screamed as soon as he saw the damaged statues.

「アッ、これはみんな模造品だ。しかし、へんですね。きのうまでは、たしかにほんものがここにおいてあったのですよ。わたしはきのうの午後、この陳列棚の中へはいったのですから、まちがいありません。」

"Ow! These are fake. But it's odd. Definitely there were the real things until yesterday. I'm sure because I got in this showcase."

「すると、きのうまでほんものだったのが、きょうとつぜん、にせものとかわったというのだね。へんだな、いったい、これはどうしたというのだ。」
　総監がキツネにつままれたような表情で、一同を見まわしました。

"Then they were real things until yesterday and today, they suddenly became conterfeits. It's weird. What on earth is happening here."
The chief of the M.P. looked at everyone with a very confused expression.

「まだおわかりになりませんか。つまり、この博物館の中は、すっかり、からっぽになってしまったということですよ。」
　明智はこういいながら、向こうがわの別の陳列棚を指さしました。

"Don't you get it? It means this whole museum is now empty."
Akechi said pointing at the showcases on the other side.

「な、なんだって？　すると、きみは……。」
　刑事部長が、思わずとんきょうな声をたてました。

"What? Then, you.."
The chief detective gave a freakish voice.

 

館長と北小路博士がごっちゃになってないか、ちょっとわからなくなりました。
博士であり館長であるので、doctor かdirector か。。
