Dali When I was living in the US, I worked at a Japanese restaurant. They had a huge variety of Japanese food. In the evening especially, many couples came on dates because a university was nearby. In this restaurant there were some small zashiki rooms with horigotatsu for two people to have a very nice romantic quiet nabe dinner together.

Dali Yes. In the kitchen, the chefs were all Japanese. They were born in Japan and came to the US. They spoke fairly good English but not perfectly. The waiters were all American. This restaurant provided authentic Japanese food, made by Japanese chefs.
ダリちゃん そう。厨房では、シェフは全員日本人だった。日本で生まれてアメリカに来ていた。そこそこ英語はできたが完ぺきではなかった。ウェイターは全員アメリカ人だった。このレストランでは、日本人のシェフが作る本格的な日本食を提供していた。

Dali One evening, a young boy and girl came to have a romantic date together. As their waiter, I took the order and came back to the kitchen and yelled, “We got an order for Kamo nabe for two people.” That night’s chef had a very peculiar sense of humor. He said, “Who? What two people?” I said, “It’s a young couple from the university. It looks like their first date. So they are a little bit nervous but look happy and enjoying themselves.” The chef replied, “I have a good idea.” First, he took a carrot. It was just an ordinary carrot. But it turned out that he was a very good sculptor. He carved the carrot into an extremely life-like penis! It was life-like, but large and grotesque. He handed it to me and said, “Hehehe, put this in the nabe broth.”

Dali I said to him, “No, never! I could never do that!” The chef asked, “Why not?” I replied, “They are a shy young couple, and it seems to be their first date. I can’t do this to them.” He said, “Ah…, OK, OK, OK.” So he continued preparing nabe and vegetables. He put the broth in a pot, and called me, “Dali-chan, bring the broth to the couple and then come back to get the vegetables, OK?”
ダリちゃん わしはシェフに「ダメダメ！ とてもできないよ！」と言った。シェフは「なんで？」と聞く。わしは「彼らはシャイな若いカップルで、初デートみたいなのにそんなことできません！」と答えた。シェフは「ああ、わかった、わかった」と言った。それでシェフは鍋と野菜の用意を続けた。シェフはスープを鍋に入れ、わしを呼んで「ダリちゃん、このスープをお二人さんに運んだら野菜を取りに来てくれ。わかった？」と言った。

Dali So I brought the broth and a portable stove to the couple’s room, and put it on the small table. The couple was a very cute girl and a handsome young boy. They were very polite, and said to me, “Thank you very much.” And I took the lid off and then looked in the nabe, when I saw the big orange penis. They said nothing, and they pretended not to see it. I left the penis, and rushed back to the kitchen in a hurry.

Dali I came back to the kitchen with the lid, so embarrassed and shocked. I was so angry at the Japanese chef. But he was smiling and laughing and said, “Dali-chan, what did they say?”
ダリちゃん わしは鍋の蓋を持って厨房に戻った。気まずくて、ショックを受けた状態で。わしはその日本人シェフに怒った。でもシェフはニコニコして、大笑い「ダリちゃん。お二人さん、なにか言ってた？」と。

Dali Later, I brought the vegetables and meat. I pretended as if nothing was out of the ordinary. They also acted as if nothing happened. After they finished their dinner, as American restaurant waiters usually do, I asked them, “Was everything OK? Do you need anything else?” They replied, while giving me a tip, “No, no, it was delicious, thank you.” When I saw the finished pot, there wasn’t that stuff made of carrot. They certainly ate it up.
ダリちゃん しばらくしてわしは野菜と肉を運んで行った。わしは別段何もなかったように振舞った。彼らもまた何もなかったように振舞っていた。食事を終えると、アメリカのレストランで普通、ウェイターがそうするように「お楽しみなられましたか？ 他にご用はございませんか？」と聞いた。彼らはわしにチップを渡しながら「いえいえ、おいしかったよ。ありがとう」と言ってくれた。食事を終えた後の鍋を見ると、例のニンジンでできたブツはもはや存在しなかった。きっと食べたんだろう。
