Dali Hey, Ina-chan. What is Japanese university life like?
ダリちゃん ねえ、イナちゃん。日本の大学生活ってどんな感じ？
Me Well, I think that entering Japanese prestigious universities is very hard. But I heard that once entering such universities, studying is not serious, tests are easy, and students often skip their classes. They spend most of their time working for spending money. So, they maybe enjoy a happy university life.
私 そうだねえ。日本の有名大学に入るのはとても難しいと思うけど、でも一旦そのような大学に入れば、勉強は過酷でないし、テストは易しいし、学生はよく授業をさぼると聞いたことがある。彼らは遊ぶ金欲しさでほとんどの時間をバイトに費やしてる。で、楽しい大学生活を謳歌してるんじゃない？
Dali Oh, that’s no good. It’s no good because they do not get proper education. It’s a waste of time and money. They learn nothing!
ダリちゃん それはよくないねえ。よくないよ。だってちゃんとした教育を受けてないもん。時間と金の無駄だね。何にも学んでないじゃない！
Me How about American university life?
私 アメリカの大学生活はどうなの？
Dali When I was in university, it was very difficult. We studied hard, took difficult tests, and were very well educated. Concerning their university lives, most Americans agree with two things. First, that university is extremely difficult―much more difficult than high school. And second, that our days at university were the happiest time of our lives.
ダリちゃん わしが大学生の時、とてもハードだったよ。猛勉強して、難しいテストを受けて、十分な教育を受けたよ。大学生活に関しては、ほとんどのアメリカ人は次の２つの事に同意する。第一点。大学は究極にハード。高校よりずっとハード。そして第二点。大学での日々は一生のうちで最も幸せだったという事。

Dali Be quiet! Anyway, I can say I never missed a single class. If one misses a class, it becomes too difficult to keep up with the class and pass the final exam. It’s too stressful.
ダリちゃん おだまり！ とにかくわしは授業をひとつも休んだことがないと胸を張って言える。授業を休むと授業についていくのと最終試験に合格するのがすごく難しくなる。とてもストレスフルだね。
Me Your school life was tough. So, why do you say that university life in the US is so much fun?
私 ダリちゃんの学校生活は大変だったんだね。じゃあなぜアメリカの大学生活はそんなに楽しいと言えるの？
Dali In university, you attend classes with new friends. You make so many new friends, boys and girls, who are all the same age. You study together in a class. After class, you have lunch together in the school cafeteria.
ダリちゃん 大学では、新しい友達と授業に出席する。みんな同い年の男性、女性、ほんとたくさんの友達ができる。クラスで一緒に勉強する。授業の後は学校のカフェテリアで一緒にランチを取る。
Me It’s the same as in Japan!

Dali No! Shut up! I’m not finished! In Japanese university, everybody goes home after school. But in American university, everybody lives together. We live on university campus together―24 hours a day. So, after we study with friends in a class, we go to our dormitory, which is also full of dormitory friends. Every university has dormitories. A university without a dormitory is not a university. In my university there was a rule, in which we had to live in a dormitory for the first and second years. (For the third and fourth years, we could live off-campus. But if you prefer, you could elect to stay in dormitory.) This is an important part of university education. Living together with your fellow students is the biggest difference between Japanese and American universities, I think.
ダリちゃん うるさい！ おだまり！ 話の途中！ 日本の大学では学校が終わればみんな帰宅する。でもアメリカの大学では、みんな一緒に住むんだ。わしらは大学の構内で一緒に住むんだ。一日２４時間。だから、授業で友達と勉強した後、わしらの寄宿舎に行くんだ。そこにも寄宿舎の友達がたくさんいる。どの大学にも寄宿舎がある。寄宿舎がなければ大学じゃない。わしの大学には規則があって１回生と２回生は寄宿舎に住まなければならなかった。（３回生と４回生は学外に住めるが希望すれば寄宿舎に留まる選択ができた。）これは大学教育の重要な部分だ。学校友達と共同生活をすることが日本とアメリカの大学の最大の違いだと思うよ。

私 ワー、大学構内に住まなきゃならなかったんだ。知らなかった！
Dali There was a study room in the dormitory and we studied very hard. It’s enjoyable to study difficult things together with your friends. Of course, I could study with friends in my private room. We study until late at night but after ten or eleven o’clock, somebody might say, “Let’s stop for today!” And others say, “Yes. Let’s stop!” While opening the refrigerator, we shout, “Beer, beer, beer!” And we get drunk. Almost every night. Every weekend, you can go to parties. You can also go drinking at a bar. But on Mondays, you must be serious again to study very hard. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and maybe also daytime on Saturday and Sunday, we study. This is repeated over and over for four years!
ダリちゃん 寄宿舎には学習屋があってとてもよく勉強した。友達と一緒に難しいことを学ぶのは楽しいことだ。もちろん自分個人の部屋で友達と勉強することもできた。夜遅くまで勉強するが10時や11時を過ぎると誰かが「今日はここまで！」と言う。そうすると他のみんなは「うん。ここまで！」と言う。冷蔵庫を開けながら「ビール、ビール、ビール！」と叫ぶ。そして酔っぱらうんだ。ほとんど毎晩。毎週末はパーティーに出かけられる。バーに飲みにも行ける。でも月曜日になれば、再びしっかりまじめに勉強しなければならない。月、火、水、木、金、それに土曜と日曜の昼間、わしらは勉強する。それが４年間何度も繰り返されるんだ！

Dali Yes. As I always say, my university days were the happiest days of my life. I think Japanese universities are very boring, and a waste of time and money.
ダリちゃん そう。わしがいつも言うように、大学時代は人生で一番幸せな日々だった。日本の大学は非常に退屈で時間とお金の無駄だと思うよ。
