昨日で、東日本大震災が発生して２ヶ月。被災地、日本各地で犠牲になった方々への黙祷が捧げられました。
この東日本大震災の被災地には、世界各地から、復興への願い、祈りを込めて「千羽鶴・1000 Origami Cranes」が届けられているそうです。日本の伝統文化の折り紙、そしてこの千羽鶴に込められる思いが、今や世界に知られてきているのだと改めて感じました。

“It is a group of one thousand origami paper cranes held together by strings. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. The crane in Japan is one of the mystical or holy creatures (others include the dragon and the tortoise), and is said to live for a thousand years. In Japan, it is commonly said that folding 1000 paper origami cranes makes a person's wish come true. This makes them popular gifts for special friends and family.”

Russian schoolchildren have brought about a thousand origami paper cranes to Japan’s Consulate General in Vladivostok as a gesture of sympathy with the Japanese people. In Japan, it is commonly believed that folding 1,000 paper cranes can make your wish come true.

Leonardo Da Vinci Academy: One Thousand Paper Cranes
On August 6, 1946, Japan was bombed by the Americans. An atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Now, once again, Japan is struggling to survive, their lives are in great danger. An earthquake and tsunami hit some parts of Japan. Nuclear plants are releasing radiation. This radiation can lead to serious diseases.
A few months ago, our Grade 4 teacher, Ms. Rita De Angelis, made us read “ Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes ”. This non-fiction story is based on how the atomic bomb destroyed Hiroshima. Sadako is an 11-year-old girl who got leukemia from the radiation in the air. Sadako began making paper cranes in hope of a cure. The people of Japan believed that a thousand paper cranes could cure a person of a disease and good luck will be sent their way. Sadly, Sadako died before completing her cranes. Her classmates decided to write a book about her and continued making the paper cranes.
Leonardo Da Vinci Academy’s class 4A and 4B decided to fold one thousand paper cranes for Japan to show their support. All students are very happy and proud of their project.
この記事に書かれている「Sadako」とは、広島平和記念公園の「原爆の子の像」のモデルとなった「佐々木禎子・ささき さだこ」さんです。
１９４５年８月６日、広島に落とされた１発の原子爆弾により２歳で被爆し、９年後の小学校６年生の時に白血病と診断され、翌１９５５年１０月に１２歳で亡くなりました。病気の回復を願いながら折り鶴を折り続けましたが、６４４羽折ったところで、その願いもむなしく息を引き取ったという実話です。
その死を悼む級友たちの行動が募金運動に発展し、１９５８年のこどもの日に、原爆で命を落とした子供たちの慰霊と、核のない世界、平和を祈念して、広島市平和記念公園内に「原爆の子の像」が作られました。
現在では、折り鶴は、佐々木禎子さんのストーリーとともに平和の象徴として世界に広がっています。
