『日本書紀』皇極天皇 14
巨勢德太臣等、燒斑鳩宮、灰中見骨、誤謂王死、解圍退去。由是、山背大兄王等、四五日間、淹留於山、不得喫飲。三輪文屋君、進而勸曰、請、移向於深草屯倉、從茲乘馬、詣東國、以乳部爲本、興師還戰、其勝必矣。山背大兄王等對曰、如卿所噵、其勝必然。但吾情冀、十年不役百姓。以一身之故、豈煩勞萬民。又於後世、不欲民言由吾之故喪己父母。豈其戰勝之後、方言丈夫哉。夫損身固國、不亦丈夫者歟。
有人遙見上宮王等於山中、還噵蘇我臣入鹿。入鹿聞而大懼、速發軍旅、述王所在於高向臣國押曰、速可向山求捉彼王。國押報曰、僕守天皇宮、不敢出外。入鹿卽將自往。于時、古人大兄皇子、喘息而來問、向何處。入鹿具說所由。古人皇子曰、鼠伏穴而生。失穴而死。入鹿由是止行。遣軍將等、求於膽駒。竟不能覓。
≪英訳≫
Kose no Tokoda no Omi (巨勢徳太臣) and his men set fire to Ikaruga Palace (斑鳩宮). Seeing bones among the ashes, they mistakenly believed that the prince had perished. Thus, they lifted the siege and withdrew.
As a result, Yamashiro no Ōe no Ō (山背大兄王) and his followers remained in the mountains for four or five days, unable to find anything to eat or drink. Miwa no Fumiya no Kimi (三輪文屋君) stepped forward and advised, “Let us move to the Miyake (屯倉) at Fukakusa (深草). From there, we can mount horses and head east. Using the people of Chichibe (乳部) from Kamitsumiya (上宮) as a foundation, we shall raise an army and return to fight. Victory will surely be ours.”
Yamashiro no Ōe no Ō replied, “If we were to follow your plan, we would surely win. However, I have resolved not to force the people into labor for ten years. How could I, for the sake of my own life, burden tens of thousands with suffering? Furthermore, I do not wish for future generations to say that people lost their fathers and mothers because they supported me. If one gains victory through battle, can that truly be called the way of a righteous man? But if one sacrifices himself to secure the nation, is that not the true way of a righteous man?”
Someone caught sight of the princes of Kamitsumiya (上宮) deep in the mountains and reported this to Soga no Omi Iruka (蘇我臣入鹿). Upon hearing this, Iruka was greatly alarmed. He immediately mobilized his troops and instructed Takamuku no Omi Kunioshi (高向臣国押), saying, “Go quickly to the mountains and capture that prince.”
Kunioshi replied, “I am charged with guarding the Emperor’s palace; I cannot go outside.” Iruka then resolved to go himself. At that moment, Prince Furuhito no Ōe (古人大兄皇子) came running, out of breath, and asked, “Where are you going?” Iruka explained the situation in detail.
Prince Furuhito said, “A mouse lives by hiding in its hole. If it loses its hole, it must perish.” (This was likely a warning to Iruka, suggesting that if he left his stronghold, he might face an unforeseen disaster.)
Because of this, Iruka abandoned his plan to go in person. Instead, he sent commanders to search for the prince in the Ikoma Mountains (生駒山). However, in the end, they were unable to find him.
≪この英文の和訳≫
巨勢徳太臣(こせのとこだのおみ)らは斑鳩宮(いかるがのみや)に火を放った。灰の中に骨を見つけると、王はすでに亡くなったものと誤って判断し、包囲を解いて退去した。
こうして、山背大兄王(やましろのおおえのおう)らは四、五日の間、山中にとどまり、食べ物も水も得ることができなかった。三輪文屋君(みわのふみやのきみ)が進み出て言った。「どうか深草(ふかくさ)の屯倉(みやけ 朝廷の直轄領)へ移動しましょう。そこから馬に乗って東国へ向かい、上宮(かみつみや)の乳部(ちちべ 王子の養育に奉仕した部(べ))の民をもとに軍を興し、再び引き返して戦えば、必ず勝利を得ることができるでしょう」
山背大兄王は答えた。「そなたの言うようにすれば、確かに勝利を得られるであろう。しかし、私は十年間、民を労役に使わぬと決めている。私一人のために、どうして多くの民に苦しみを強いることができようか。さらに、もし私を支持したことで、人々が戦により父母を失うようなことがあれば、後の世の者にそのように言われることは避けたい。戦に勝ったからといって、それが真に丈夫(ますらお)といえるであろうか。むしろ己の身を犠牲にして国を安んじることこそ、真の丈夫(ますらお)ではなかろうか」
そのとき、上宮(かみつみや)の王らが山中にいるのを遠くから見た者がいた。そして帰ると、このことを蘇我入鹿臣(そがのいるかのおみ)に報告した。
入鹿はこれを聞いて大いに恐れた。すぐに軍勢を召集し、王の所在を高向臣国押(たかむくのくにおし)に告げて、「急ぎ山へ向かい、王を探し出して捕えよ」と命じた。
国押は答えた。「私は天皇の宮をお守りする身でございます。宮を離れることはできません」と。そこで、入鹿は自ら出向こうとした。そのとき、古人大兄皇子(ふるひとのおおえのみこ)が息を切らしながら駆けつけ、「どこへ向かわれるのか」と尋ねた。入鹿は事の次第を詳しく説明した。
すると、古人大兄皇子は言った。「鼠は穴に身を潜めて生きる。穴を失えば死ぬほかはない」（これは、入鹿を鼠に例え、本拠を離れれば思わぬ災難に遭うかもしれないと諫めた言葉であろう）。
この言葉を受けて、入鹿は出立を思いとどまった。そして将軍たちを送り、生駒山(いこまやま)を捜索させた。しかし、ついに王を見つけることはできなかった。
