『日本書紀』垂仁天皇 4
四年秋九月丙戌朔戊申、皇后母兄狹穗彥王、謀反、欲危社稷、因伺皇后之燕居而語之曰「汝孰愛兄與夫焉。」於是、皇后不知所問之意趣、輙對曰「愛兄也。」則誂皇后曰「夫、以色事人、色衰寵緩。今天下多佳人、各遞進求寵、豈永得恃色乎。是以冀、吾登鴻祚、必與汝照臨天下、則高枕而永終百年、亦不快乎。願爲我弑天皇。」仍取匕首、授皇后曰「是匕首佩于裀中、當天皇之寢、廼刺頸而弑焉。」皇后於是、心裏兢戰、不知所如、然視兄王之志、便不可得諫。故受其匕首、獨無所藏、以著衣中。遂有諫兄之情歟。
五年冬十月己卯朔、天皇、幸來目居於高宮、時天皇枕皇后膝而晝寢。於是、皇后、既无成事而空思之「兄王所謀、適是時也。」卽眼淚流之落帝面、天皇則寤之、語皇后曰「朕今日夢矣、錦色小蛇、繞于朕頸、復大雨從狹穗發而來之濡面。是何祥也。

On September 23 of the fourth year, the Empress's brother, Prince Sahohiko, plotted a rebellion to destabilize the country. He approached the Empress when she was relaxing at home and asked her, “Which do you value more, your brother or your husband?” Not understanding the implication of the question, the Empress replied, “I value my brother more.”
Prince Sahohiko then said to the Empress, “Relying on beauty to serve someone is fleeting; as beauty fades, so does love. There are many beautiful women in the world, each seeking favor. One cannot rely on beauty forever. If I become the Emperor, together we can rule the realm. Wouldn’t it be pleasant to live a long life with high esteem? Please, for my sake, kill the Emperor.” He handed her a dagger and instructed, “Hide this dagger in your clothing and, when the Emperor is asleep, stab him in the neck.” The Empress was terrified and unsure of what to do, but considering her brother’s intent, she could not easily object. She kept the dagger hidden in her clothing.
On October 1 of the fifth year, the Emperor visited Kume and was staying in Takamiya. At that time, he took a nap with his head on the Empress’s lap. The Empress, having done nothing, thought to herself, “Now is the time for my brother’s rebellion,” and tears fell onto the Emperor’s face. The Emperor awoke and said to the Empress, “I had a dream. A brocade-colored small snake coiled around my neck, and a heavy rain from Saho drenched my face. What omen could this be?"
≪この英文の和訳≫
四年秋九月二十三日、皇后の兄である狭穂彦王（さほひこのみこ）は、謀反（むほん）を企てて国を傾けようとしました。皇后が寛いで家におられる時を狙って行き、「お前は、兄と夫とどちらを大事に思うか？」と尋ねました。皇后はその意味が分らず、「兄を大事に思います」と答えました。
狭穂彦王は皇后に言いました。「美貌を頼りに人に仕えるのは、美貌が衰えれば愛も薄れる。今、世の中には美しい女性が多く、それぞれが寵愛を求めている。いつまでも美貌だけを頼りにすることはできない。もし私が天皇になれば、お前と共に天下を治めることができれば枕を高くして百年でもいられるのは快いことではないか。どうか、私のために天皇を殺してくれ」。そして、匕首(あいくち 短刀)を皇后に渡し、「この匕首を衣服の中に隠し、天皇が眠っている時に首を刺して殺せ」と言いました。皇后は非常に恐れられ、どうすべきか分からなかったが、兄の意向を考えると、簡単に反対することもできませんでした。彼女はその短刀を隠し持ち、衣服の中にしまいました。
五年冬十月一日、天皇は来目（くめ）にお越しになり、高宮におられました。時に皇后の膝を枕に昼寝をされました。皇后は何もされなかったため、「兄の謀反は今この時だ」と思い、涙が流れて天皇の顔に落ちました。天皇は目を覚まし、皇后に「私は夢を見ました。錦色の小さな蛇が私の首に巻きつき、大雨が狭穂（さほ）から降ってきて私の顔を濡らした。これは何の兆しだろうか」と話されました。
