於是天孫於邊床則拭其兩足。於中床則據其兩手。於内床則寛坐於眞床覆衾之上。海神見之。乃知是天神之孫。益加崇敬云云。海神召赤女口女問之。時口女自口出鈎以奉焉。赤女即赤鯛也。口女即鯔魚也。時海神授鈎火火出見尊。因教之曰。還兄鈎時天孫則當言。汝生子八十連屬之裔。貧鈎。狹狹貧鈎言訖。三下唾與之。又兄入海釣時。天孫宜在海濱以作風招。風招即嘯也。如此則吾起瀛風邊風。以奔波溺惱。火折尊歸來具遵神教。至及兄釣之日。弟居濱而嘯之。時迅風忽起。兄則溺苦。無由可生。便遥請弟曰。汝久居海原必有善術。願以救之。若活我者。吾生兒八十連屬。不離汝之垣邊。當爲俳優之民也。於是弟嘯已停而風亦還息。故兄知弟徳欲自伏辜。而弟有慍色。不與共言。於是兄著犢鼻。以赭塗掌塗面。告其弟曰。吾汚身如此。永爲汝俳優者。乃擧足踏行學其溺苦之状。初潮漬足時則爲足占。至膝時則擧足。至股時則走廻。至腰時則捫腰。至腋時則置手於胸。至頚時則擧手飄掌。自爾及今曾無廢絶。
≪英訳≫
The heavenly descendant wiped their feet on the entrance mat, clasped their hands on the next mat, and sat leisurely on the innermost mat covered with bedding. Witnessing this, the sea god recognized them as a divine grandchild and grew even more respectful.
The sea god summoned Red Lady and Mouth Lady to inquire. At that moment, Mouth Lady produced a hook from her mouth to offer. Red Lady represented the red sea bream, and Mouth Lady represented the sea bass. The sea god, then, handed the hook to Hoori-no-Mikoto, saying, “When returning the hook to your brother, the heavenly descendant should say, ‘Your descendants will inherit the needle of poverty, becoming increasingly destitute with each generation.’ After saying this, spit three times and give it to him. Also, when your brother fishes in the sea, the heavenly descendant should be by the shore, performing a wind charm called ‘Kazaogi,’ which is blowing through pursed lips. By doing so, I will raise winds at sea, causing tumultuous waves.”
Hoori-no-Mikoto followed the instructions upon his return, and on the day his brother fished, the younger brother, at the shore, performed the wind charm. A swift wind suddenly arose, and the elder brother struggled in drowning waves. Desperate, he pleaded from afar, “You have lived long by the sea; surely, you know some skill. Please save me. If you do, I promise my descendants will stay near your dwelling for generations, becoming a tribe of performers.”
The younger brother ceased his charm, and the wind subsided. Realizing his brother’s virtue, the elder prepared to repent, but the younger, still angered, remained silent. The elder then donned a loincloth, smeared red soil on his palms and forehead, declaring, “I have stained myself thus. I shall forever be a performer for your sake,” and mimicked the distressing scene by lifting his foot and pretending to struggle.
Starting with dipping toes as the tide approached, rising on tiptoes when it reached the knees, lifting the feet at the thighs, running around at the waist, touching the waist as it reached, placing hands on the chest at the armpits, and fluttering hands at the neck’s reach, the dance continues uninterrupted to this day among the descendants of these people known as the Hayato.
≪この英文の和訳≫
天孫は玄関の床では、両足をぬぐわれました。次の床では、両手を押さえられました。一番奥の床では、真床（まとこ）に覆いかぶさった布団の上に、ゆったりと座っていました。この光景を見て海神は彼らが神の孫であることを理解し、ますます尊敬しました。
海神は赤女（あかめ）とロ女（くちめ）を呼び出して尋ねました。その時、ロ女は口から針を取り出して差し出しました。赤女は赤鯛（あかだい）、ロ女は鯔(ぼら)を表しています。海神(わたつみ)は火折尊（ほおりのみこと）に針を授け、「兄に針を返すときは『あなたが生まれる子の末代まで、貧乏神の針、ますます小さく貧乏になる針』と言ってください。言い終わったら三度唾を吐いて差し上げてください。また、兄が海で釣りをする時に、天孫は海辺にいて風招（かざおき）をしなさい。風招は口をすぼめて息を吹き出すことです。そうすると私は沖つ風（おきつかぜ）、辺つ風（へつかぜ）を立てて、速い波で彼を溺れさせましょう」と説明しました。
火折尊は帰ってきて、海神の指示通りに行動しました。兄が釣りをする日に、弟は浜辺にいて嘯（うそぶ）きました。その結果、疾風（はやて）が急に吹き起こり、兄は溺れ苦しむことになりました。生き延びる見込みがなかったので、兄は遠くから弟に救いを求めました。「お前は長い間海原で生きてきたから、きっと何か良い技を知っているだろう。どうか助けてくれ。私を助けてくれたら、私の生まれる子の末代まで、お前の住まいの垣のそばを離れず、＊俳優（わざおぎ）の一族となることを約束する」と言いました。

その結果、弟は嘯くことをやめ、風もまた収まりました。兄は弟の徳を認識し、自ら罪を償おうとしました。しかし、弟はまだ怒りっぽく、口をききませんでした。そこで兄は褌（ふんどし）を身にまとい、赤土（あかつち）を手のひらと額に塗り、「私はこのように身を汚した。永遠にお前のための俳優（わざおぎ）となろう」と宣言し、足をあげて踏みならし、その時の苦しそうな真似をしました。
最初は潮が足に触れるときにつま先立ちし、膝についたときには足をあげ、股についたときには走り回り、腰についたときには腰を撫で回しました。そして脇に届いたときには手を胸に置き、首に届いたときには手を上げてひらひらさせました。こうして、今日に至るまで、これらの人々の子孫である隼人たちは、この舞踏をやめることはありませんでした。
