Economic globalization has changed the United States

Economic globalization has changed the United States

In the late twentieth century, economic globalization transformed the United States. Explain what globalization is, and describe how it affected the U.S. economy and population in the 1990s.

In the late twentieth century, after world war two and cold war, America connected its national economy with the rest of the world. This is partly because of the development of the technology and needs for global communication, partly because of the wars, which brought countries together to some extent.

In order to explain how economic globalization affected the U.S. economy and population, the definition of globalization will be given. Globalization refers both to the shrinking of the world and the increased consciousness of the world as a whole. It is a result of dramatically increased cross-border trade, investment, and culture exchange. Growing integration and interdependence are shown among countries. A country’s policies and situation will not only affect the people in its own country, but will also influence the people and economy in other countries. Countries and countries link together and they cooperate in almost every area, including education, culture, science, etc. In America, under the lead of Clinton, America lowered the barriers of the goods and capital to encourage and promote globalization. A large quantity of goods and capital is able to transport inside American border legally, which enhanced the freedom of trade and increased the state competitiveness.

With the encouragement for globalization, America was prosperous and it became a popular country for immigration. People from Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia and other places came to America to seek for better life. They came to America for trades, investments, new opportunities and so on and these people settled down in America. These people became the components of American population and they affected American culture, consumption and racial composition. However, with more and more people moving into America, in some quarters, new immigration regulations for limiting the movement of immigration, which was known as Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, came out. Still, what the globalization and immigration brought to the America were of great importance. Now the America is often called the melting pot because of its various culture and numerous races and it is still an important country for immigration.

From the perspective of economic factor, Americans encouragement and dominance in economic globalization brought a dramatic economic growth in the 1990s. America even took the lead to promote cross-border economies through North American Free Trade Agreement, which is known as NAFTA. However, although globalization brought benefits to most of the countries, the benefits were not equally shared among countries and districts inside America. This result was understandable but crucial for some countries. In America, globalization changed people’s life. For workers, for example, they were likely to fall into dilemma because more people from other countries were now able to come to their hometown and compete them for limited job opportunities. Also, for developing countries, because of the globalization, goods and services from developed countries with better qualities and prices might bring disasters to local industries. To tackle the problems of globalization, many countries set up quotas and impose taxes to protect local companies. However, this method may turn out to harm the local economy in the long run. Also, there are some other problems brought by the globalization, including environment and human rights.

To conclude, globalization refers to the increasing integration and interdependence of countries. Immigration and economy growth were two obvious results of American dominance in international economics. Although globalization brought benefits to America, the benefits were not shared equally. Also, globalization brought some problems to America and other countries, including environment problems, workers’ rights, human rights, etc. How to tackle globalization properly is a difficult question that needs the hard work and cooperation of all countries to seek for its answer.

Tobacco crackdown

Tobacco crackdown
The fact that many individuals smoke on campus is known to all. Though many of us are aware that smoking would cause series of problems including harms to ourselves and our classmates, generally, they don’t think it to be a big deal, what they care is enjoyment of smoking. Though I don’t smoke, I suggest Tobacco-Free Colleges and Universities. Thus, as far as I am concerned, the fact that undergraduate students smoke on campus has been one of issue the social concerns with and the administrators of universities, teachers, and parents are also paying attention on it.
Solutions
According to researches, many people die of smoking every year, including students. Statistics show that smoking related disease claim over 393,000 American lives each year. Though many people are aware of the harms smoking do to people’s health, it is not easy to abstained themselves from smoking. Though UND is also a tobacco-free college, I don’t think it to be sufficient to make rules to forbid people from smoking. We must do more in order to uproot smoking.
The society’s role should be following. Firstly, though stores should not be forbidden from sailing tobacco to students, students on campus should be restricted by some rules. Secondly, money collected from the application of the above rules should be invested to encourage undergraduate to abstain from tobacco by advertisement and newspaper.
The universities should make following measures. Apart from punishing those who disobeyed the rules, universities should wipe out students’ addiction to tobacco psychologically and mentally since it is more likely that it is students’ psychological addiction which drives them to smoke without stops. Otherwise, only by punishing people when they betray rules, students’ addiction to smoking could not be wiped out persistently. Secondly, teachers and administrators should act as exemplars who have abstained from smoking successfully and would not smoke any more in the appearance of their students any more. To achieve this, the university should deepen teachers’ awareness of the harms of smoking to people’s health. In addition, the Student Union should be mobilized to cooperate with administrators to launch an anti-tobacco war, encouraging students’ determination to abstain from smoking.
Individually, students should make four changes. Firstly, individual should have more knowledge about the threats of tobacco to their health, forming an aversion to tobacco at the same time, which means that they should make efforts not to think of and not to have access to tobacco at anytime and anywhere. Secondly, erected view of the world and that of life should be established, cultivating new and good ways of living habituation and psychology and enhancing individuals’ ability to confront hardships. Thirdly, proper ways of social relations should be established. In another words, individuals should not make friend with anyone until they figure out that he or she are good man. In addition, individuals should not smoking at any hardships and especially driven by their fellows inducement to smoke. Fourthly, individuals should comply with what are required by warning from anti-tobacco organizations and keep alarm of the threat of tobacco.
Recommendations
Based on my previous consideration, I think it is necessary to join the American Lung Association and establish detailed collaboration with this organization in order to help students abstain from smoking and make UND a Tobacco-free Colleges and Universities in the real sense.

China's family planning policy

China's family planning policy
Since the family planning policy was implemented in China, it has aroused heated debates around the issue that whether it should be continued. What needs to be admitted is that family planning policy does have both advantages and disadvantages. Instead of attempting to cover up either the advantage or disadvantage, this essay aims to analyze which one affects China more. After balancing, the author believes that the stringent family planning policy should be abandoned, because the disadvantage it brings outweighs the advantage.
From the basic point of view that family planning policy violates human rights, it should be abdicated. Giving brith to children is the nature as well as the basic right of human beings. Every one has the right to choose whether they want kids or not and how many kids they want. It is cruel for them to sacrifice the joyfulness of bearing children in order to obey the policy and avoid punishment. That is also the perspective from which foreign countries criticize the family planning policy.
Combined with the current demographic structure in China, also, family planning policy should be abandoned. According to Chen PC and Kols A, “With this policy, China has reduced its birthrate from 34/1000 in 1970 to 18/1000 in 1979. By 1980, as a result of the recent campaign for 1 child families, an estimated 51% of all births in China were 1st births. By 1981 over 1/2 of all couples with 1 child had pledged not to have another”. From these figures, it is not difficult to conclude that there are far more old people in China’s society than young people today. It, at the same time, discloses two severe problems: lack of labor forces and an aging population. According to Therese Hesketh, Ph.D., Li Lu, M.D., and Zhu Wei Xing, M.P.H., “In China, the percentage of the population over the age of 65 years was 5 percent in 1982 and now stands at 7.5 percent but is expected to rise to more than 15 percent by 2025”. Therefore, the limited amount of young people today in China bear the unprecedented great pressure of supporting the large amount of old people. Moreover, the lack of young people also means the insufficiency of initiative and creativity. China now is experiencing a progressing prosperity, which means that it needs substantial talents and wisdom to support its development and continue the upward trend. Low birth rate, in the long run would be a deadly strike for the strengthening of China.
Another problem brought by family planning policy is the imbalanced sex ratio. According to Therese Hesketh, Ph.D., Li Lu, M.D., and Zhu Wei Xing, M.P.H., “Since the onset of the one-child policy, there has been a steady increase in the reported sex ratio, from 1.06 in 1979, to 1.11 in 1988, to 1.17 in 2001”. Men outnumbers women means that some of them definitely could not have marriage. Those who could not have marriage are always men who have no wealth and social status. Mental health problems may occur among these unmarried men and society would be unstable.
Some people would argue that family planning policy should not be abandoned because our earth is suffering from resources shortage and severe environmental problems. However, resources and environmental problems are solvable and the key element lies in the wisdom of people. China has once suffered from food shortage. However, a scientist in China named Longping Yuan has worked out an approach to increase the output of rice and thus relieve the urgent need for food in this country. As for the environmental issues, it is the common responsibility of the world. Decrease of population could never eradicate the problem. What counts more is the improvement of people’s awareness and measures of protecting the environment. Therefore, these should not be excuses to defend the relaxation of the policy. It is the intelligence of human beings that can solve the coming up problems.
In conclusion, the family planning policy in China should be relaxed even abandoned for the benefits of the country. Though it has both advantages and disadvantages, the adverse effects it brings outweigh its benefits. The bad impacts of high birthrate, including pressures caused by resources shortage and environmental pollution, are manageable once we focus on it. However, consequences caused by lack of labor forces, imbalanced sexual ratio and aging population may be far more severe than what we have imagines. They may even need social reform to ease the problems. Therefore, family planning policy in China should be abandoned.

Answers to four questions about "Tomorrow is too far"

下面为大家整理一篇优秀的essay代写范文 -- Answers to four questions about "Tomorrow is too far",文章讲述在读完短篇小说《明天就是太远》之后,作者Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie的叙述和描绘非常精致,准确且令人着迷。

Answers to four questions about "Tomorrow is too far"
After reading the short story ‘Tomorrow Is Too Far’, what the author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, narrates and depicts is very exquisite, accurate and gripping. The character point of view is invisible and needs to be explored. In this story, a woman reveals a painful secret hidden for years. The secret is about the true reason of her brother’s death. At the ending of this story, after eighteen years, the woman came back to Nigeria because of her Grandmama’s death. She didn’t tell Dozie, the only witness of Nonso’s death, that she felt very terrible after Nonso’s death. Based on the whole story, the point at which my ending begins lies in the woman’s psychological changes.

Alternate ending of ‘Tomorrow Is Too Far’
When Dozie asks you how your life has been since Nonso’s death, in that moment, different kinds of feelings instantaneously rise in your mind. Those feelings may be involved with regret, sadness and shame etc. You cannot wait to tell all of your feelings to Dozie because he may be the only person who can understand you and share the pain torturing you during all those eighteen years. However, you can't say out all the time. You are wordless. Dozie gazes at you in silence. Then the atmosphere is so quiet that you both can hear the heartbeat each other. The silence lasts for a long time. In this period, you try to communicate with Dozie many times. For no reason, you feel that he has the same expectation as well. But later you just find that you even have no courage to conduct direct eye contact with him, let alone communicate.

Gradually, you begin to recall lots of sleepless nights when you twist and turn and see the scene in which Nonso died perform again and again. It is visible before the eyes as it happened yesterday. At the same time, you remember your various dreams where Nonso appears within those years. Among those dreams, Nonso would smile at you and passionately invite you to play with him. When you are bullied by other boys, he always put himself forward. Sometimes, Nonso would query you angrily that why you can cruelly do such a thing to him because he trusts and loves you so much.

Under the circumstances, the most miserable thing is that you can’t tell it to your mother or anyone else so that you have to bear it alone. It is really difficult for you to live through all those eighteen years. Now, back to the Nigeria again, you suddenly realize that it may be the best chance to deal with the true secret of Nonso’s death based on the saying that it is better for the doer to undo what he has done. At this very moment, you are more eager to put an ending to this event than before. As a result, you muster up all your courage and look up. You look at Dozie and stutter that you really have had a very hard time during those years and most of the time, you just want to commit suicide towards yourself in order to finish all the things. However, it is not so simple to end everything. Once, when you have got ready to kill yourself, a question occurs to you that who could look after your old mother after your death. Since the experience of Nonso’s death and the divorce with your father, she cannot withstand a single blow. Thus you can imagine that she may be impossible to make a living. Then it’s clear that your death is not allowed. Dozie listens to you quietly and seriously. He says nothing. You know that you don’t need him to use words to comfort you. What you truly want is a person willing to accompany you and lend an ear to you. You have so many things to release.

Gradually, you burst into tears just like a ten-year-old girl. You ceaselessly apologize to Nonso, your mother, your Grandmama and your father and hope that they can feel your empressement and forgive your fault. At this moment, Dozie turns round, embraces you tightly and whispers that he is also very sorry to everyone.

Answers of four questions about ‘The American Embassy’
In the story ‘The American Embassy’, Adichie well presents a woman’s mental activity and thoughts in detail. The character point of view can be discussed from many sides. Generally, the story tells the apply process of a woman’s asking for asylum visa. Its background is the escape of her husband and the death of her son. As for the ending of the story, the woman gives up the apply chance during the visa interview. The point at which my ending begins lies in the woman’s complicated and tangled emotions.

Alternate ending of ‘The American Embassy’
“Ma'am, could you show me some evidences that the government is involved. As you know, nowadays, the combat between ethnic groups is drastic. It is not easy for us to judge one thing. You must prove you would not be safe if you go on living in Nigeria.” the interviewer looked at her and said patiently.
“I have said that my son is the best evidence. You can go with me and I will show you the evidence. ” She said with a straight face and a blank brain. She didn’t know why she would say these words to the interviewer. She just knew that her son Ugonna was only four years old and he should have been with her now.
“Ma'am, I’m so sorry for your son again. If you really want to obtain the asylum visa and begin a new life in America, please just show me the proof. I would like to help you.” The voice was so calm and kind that, for an instant, she suspected whether the interviewer took her words seriously although what she said was not much.
For no reason, the words “new life” began to appear in her mind on and on. “Yeah, a new life could save me. I need to start a new life which may help me totally forget who I am and forget I once had a son named Ugonna.” She soliloquized.
“Ma'am, Ma'am, have you listened to me?” the interviewer tried to get some attention from her by waving hands. ”
“Of course, I have listened to you. You said I could start a new life. You said I should show some evidences to you…”
“So…” the interviewer paused subconsciously.
“I have told you that I would like to show you the evidence, my son, if you go with me.” she said in slight excitement
“But that is not enough, Ma’am. You must show me more specific information and details, or I can’t help you”.
“You indeed can’t help me because you are not me and you can’t have personal experience of the loss of loved ones. I don’t know what evidence you want exactly. I just know the government casually kill a person-even a child without any reliable reason. So I don’t know why I need to show you any evidence. Is the evidence of the death of my son Ugonna, an only four-year-old boy, not enough? So what really do you want? Please tell me. Please tell me!” Her voice became more and more agitated. She repeatedly told herself to stay calm and that the interviewer had nothing to do with the death of her son. However, she strongly felt that she couldn’t control herself. She wanted to shout and cry without thinking about other people’s existence. There were so many things depressed in her heart these days. Just at that moment, she felt that she must release them today. However, finally, she chose to shut up because she knew nobody was willing to listen to her story since everybody was so busy with his own things. Nobody could truly feel her painful feeling.
As a result, she turned around and straightly walked to the door of the American embassy. She didn’t want to apply for asylum visa any longer. She didn’t want to meet her husband in America any more as well. What she wanted now was just to come back home quickly and she knew that her son was waiting for her to cook his favorite food. She saw him smiling at her. Then unconsciously, she picked up the pace.

American Patriot Act

American Patriot Act

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, were unprecedented. What gave rise to the attacks? How did the nation respond?

On September 11, 2001, terrorists from Al Qaeda hijacked four civilian plans and hit against twin towers of the World Trade Center and Pentagon. More than 2000 people were killed during the attacks. The world was shocked by the event and thousands of hundreds of Americans’ lives were threatened. This event was organized by Osama Bin Laden and the Al Qaeda terrorist organization governed by Taliban in Afghanistan. The purposes of the attacks were to get attention of the world and state their position of getting the Western influence out of the areas of Middle East. Bin Laden tried to gain fundamentalist Muslim control through forcing Americans to step out of Saudi Arabia by attacks.

The reasons that gave rise to the attacks were not know for sure. But there were several factors that may probably contribute to the rise of the terrorists and their capability to the attacks. Bin Laden and his followers tried to gain control over the Middle East. However, American presence in Saudi Arabia seemed to stand in their ways of gaining control, especially when American dominated in the international economy and expended its influence overseas. Fighting against Americans and forcing Americans to step out of Middle East seemed to be the mission needed to be accomplished by the terrorists. Also, the development of technology provided the method to accomplish the mission. The terrorist organization on the scale of Al Qaeda cooperated together. They decoded the secrets of America and shared the information through high technology. Then they organized one attack after another to state their position.

After the attacks, Americans felt threatened. In October 2001, American, together with Britain, attacked Afghanistan and had control on Taliban forces. Nearly at the same time, USA Patriot Act was passed by the Congress to ensure suspected terrorists and their associates would be monitored through new powers given to the government. Also, the information between national criminal investigation and foreign threats was able to exchange to lower the chances to be attacked. Department of Homeland Security was created to protect the civilians. However, as a result of the attacks, descents from the Middle East in the United States were influenced and opposed by many Americans. Innocent or not, they were seen as a potential risk in the eyes of Americans.

The 911 attacks also contributed to a new, more aggressive foreign policy according to the Bush administration. The administration pointed out that the attacks of 911 showed that many innocent people could still be the targets of the terrorists. In order to take control of the situation and prevent the attacks from happening in the future, the administration adopted an aggressive foreign policy and conducted unilateral action concerning international issues. To justify this aggressive foreign policy, the administration claimed that it was a way to protect its country given the fact that Iraq was possessing weapons of mass destruction.

The attacks of Bin Laden and Al Qaeda on September 11, 2011 killing more than 2000 people, tearing more than 2000 families apart. The attacks shocked the world and brought the world to the undesired scary. The purposes of the attacks were for the terrorists to state their position and gain over control by violence. For me, this is a selfish action taken. It killed thousands of people and put the rest remained threatened. Americans attacked back to the Afghanistan together with Britain. Things were under control. But it raised an alarm to the administration of the United States and contributed to the changes of American aggressive foreign policy.
