壮二君のゆくえ
Whereabout of Souji
松野の語ったところによりますと、けっきょく、賊は、つぎのようなとっぴな手段によって、まんまと追っ手の目をくらまし、大ぜいの見ている中をやすやすと逃げさったことがわかりました。
His story made them to find out that the thief escaped with ease by blinding persuers' eyes using peculiar means like this:
人々に追いまわされている間に、賊は庭の池にとびこんで、水の中にもぐってしまったのです。でも、ただもぐっていたのでは呼吸ができませんが、ちょうどそのへんに壮二君がおもちゃにして、すてておいた、節のない竹ぎれが落ちていたものですから、それを持って池の中へはいり、竹の筒を口にあて、いっぽうのはしを水面に出し、しずかに呼吸をして、追っ手の立ちさるのを待っていたのでした。
While running away from those people the thief plunged into the pond and was diving under water. Just diving couldn't help him but he brought the piece of bamboo which Souji threw away after playing with it, got it to his mouth and put the other end of it over the water, and was breathing quietly, waiting for the persuers leaving.
ところが、人々のあとに残って、ひとりでそのへんを見まわしていた松野運転手が、その竹ぎれを発見し、賊のたくらみを感づいたのです。思いきって竹ぎれをひっぱってみますと、はたして、池の中からどろまみれの人間があらわれてきました。
Then the driver Matsuno who left befind and looked around found that bamboo, realized what the theif's scheme. He dared to pull the bamboo and then there was a muddy person showed up from the pond.
そこで、やみの中の格闘がはじまったのですが、気のどくな松野は救いをもとめるひまもなく、たちまち、賊のために組みふせられ、賊がちゃんとポケットに用意していた絹ひもでしばりあげられ、さるぐつわをされてしまったのです。そして、服をとりかえられたうえ、高い木のまたへかつぎあげられたというしだいでした。
Then there was a fight in the dark but while poor Matsuno didn't get a time to call the help he was knocked down, tied up by the thin rope and gagged. And after the clothe were exchanged he was put over the fork of the tree.
そうわかってみますと、壮二君たちを学校へ送っていった運転手は、いよいよにせ者ときまりました。たいせつなお嬢さん坊ちゃんが、人もあろうに、二十面相自身の運転する自動車で、どこかへ行ってしまったのです。人々のおどろき、おとうさまおかあさまのご心配は、くどくど、説明するまでもありません。
Once it was found out they learned that the driver was the imposter. The precious daughter and son had been taken to somewhere by, of all people, Twenty Faces. There is no need to explain how all people were surpirised or how the father and mother were worred.
まず早苗さんの行く先、門脇中学校へ電話がかけられました。すると、意外にも早苗さんはぶじに学校へついていることがわかりました。では、賊はべつに誘かいするつもりではなかったのだなと、大安心をして、つぎには壮二君の学校へ電話をしてたずねますと、もう授業がはじまっているのに、壮二君の姿は見えないという返事です。それを聞くと、おとうさまおかあさまの顔色がかわってしまいました。
At first they called Kadowaki Junior High School which Sanae was supposed to go. And they could find her safelly there. So they were much relieved that the theif wasn't trying to abduct two children. Next they called the school of Souji to find there is no Souji although the class was already started. Now his father and mother got pale.
