Dali You idiot! “Famous” and “infamous” are both used for people or things that are well known. Famous might be good or might be bad. For example, a famous actor. This famous actor is very well known because he is a good actor. But even if he is a bad actor, if he is well known, we still say he is famous. We don’t say he is infamous. Notice that famous people can be good or bad. It just states that somebody is well known.

Dali On the other hand, “infamous” describes a person who is well known because he did a very bad act, like Adolf Hitler. Therefore, we can say he is infamous. We can also say Adolf Hitler is famous because he is well known. That said, if somebody is infamous, then many people know about that person because of his bad acts.

Dali Even if somebody is generally bad, like a newscaster who is famous because everybody enjoys watching his program in which he insults everybody harshly, he is not said to be infamous. Infamous means that there is a very bad act, (or acts), which made him well known, for example, serial murders.
