Dali In the US, New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve are popular among young people. The celebrations include partying, drinking, smooching, and counting down to the new year. Much alcohol is often consumed. However, after we get older, many people do nothing. Most Americans in Japan do not follow their native country’s customs. Instead, they enjoy Japanese customs.
ダリちゃん アメリカでは、元日と大晦日は若い人の間では有名だけど。彼らはパーティー、お酒、キスしたりカウントダウンをして新年のお祝いをするね。たくさんアルコールを飲むね。でも、年を取ると多くの人は何もしないね。日本に住んでいるアメリカ人は、アメリカの風習にとらわれず日本のお正月を楽しんでるよ。

Dali January 1 is a national holiday, but New Year’s Eve is not a holiday. We have to work. If you compare New Year’s Day to Christmas, New Year’s Day is relatively unimportant.
ダリちゃん 1月1日だけは休日だけど、12月31日は休日じゃない。仕事に行かなければならない。クリスマスに比べればどちらかというと大したことのない日さ。

Dali Many offices have a party on Christmas Eve. After I graduated from university, before I entered graduate school, I worked two or three years at a tour company. I was a tour guide. At this company, on Christmas Eve, we had cake and even alcohol. I drank so much alcohol, but I drove home. At that time, the law used to be lenient. If I had an accident, my company would be liable. Nowadays no alcohol is provided in the workplace. So sad.
ダリちゃん 多くの会社ではクリスマスイブにはパーティーが開かれる。わしは大学を卒業して、大学院に入るまでの2-3年の間、旅行会社に勤めていたんだが、ツアーガイドをしていたんだ。この会社ではクリスマスイブにはね、ケーキとアルコールまで出されたんだ。わしはアルコールを飲み過ぎて、家まで運転して帰ったこともある。そのころは、法律は緩かったしね。もし事故でも起こしたら、会社の責任だけれどもね。いまでは職場ではアルコールは出ないけどね。とても悲しいね。

Dali Christmas Eve is not a holiday. Christmas Day is a holiday. On Christmas Eve, after working until one o’clock, we had a party until five o’clock. Of course, we were paid for that time. But on the 26th, you must come back to work. We don’t have long holidays, only one day. Instead, we have a long summer vacation, which can be taken anytime. It may be 10 days, so, including weekends, 2 weeks. Rich people often take a “foreign vacation.”
ダリちゃん クリスマスは休日だけど、クリスマスイブは休日ではないよ。で、クリスマスイブの日は1時に終わる。それから5時まで会社でパーティーがあるんだ、もちろんその分の給料は出る。でも26日は仕事に戻らなければならない。長い休日というのはアメリカにはないのさ。1日だけさ。でもその分、長期夏季休暇がある。夏に限らず、いつ取ってもいい。普通10日間ぐらい、週末を含めると2週間ぐらいになるかな。お金持ちはよく、海外で休暇を取るよ。

Dali Nothing particular. There is no celebration, no customs to do anything on New Year’s Day. It is nothing, except a relaxing day off. There may be special television programs. There might be some kind of sports program. It’s a minor holiday. Americans enjoy their birthday more than New Year’s Day. There might be news programs, showing celebrations around the world. We might have a good dinner, but it’s not a special dinner. Rather than celebratory, it’s a quiet day. In fact, it is a bit depressing because we realize we are getting old. Unlike on Christmas Day or Thanksgiving Day, we usually don’t invite family to visit on New Year’s Day, although it’s not strange to do so.
ダリちゃん 特になにも。1月1日は、別にお祝いをする習慣もないし、なにもない、ただのんびりできる日かな。テレビで特別番組やスポーツ番組はあるかもしれないけれど、重要性の低い休日だね。アメリカ人は、元日より誕生日をお祝いするね。新年を祝う世界の様子がテレビで放映されるので見られると思うよ。ごちそうを食べることもあるけど、特別なディナーという訳ではない。お祝いの日というより静かな日だね。実際、年を取ったことを実感するので、多少塞ぎ込む日でもある。クリスマスや感謝祭とは違って、普通1月1日に家族を招待することもない。別に招待して変という訳ではないけどね。
