The American 20-cent piece is a coin struck from 1875 to 1878. Proposed by Nevada Senator John P. Jones, it was almost immediately rejected by the public, who confused the 20-cent coin with the Liberty Seated quarter-dollar of nearly the same size. The obverse design of the Seated Liberty on both coins was identical. The reverse design of the bald eagle on both coins was also too similar. Wow! It’s like the game of “Spot the Difference.” I found that the bird was left-facing on the 20-cent coin, while it was right-facing on the quarter. Owing to the extreme unpopularity by the public, Congress abolished the 20-cent piece on May 2, 1878. Because of the rarity, the 1876-CC (Carson City Mint) 20-cent piece fetched $564,000 at auction in 2013. American old coinage is so fascinating!
