Destroyed Nagasaki City by Atomic Bomb in August, 1945

As far as the eye could see there was nothing but burnt-out ruins after Atomic Bomb. You can see the destroyed Urakami Cathedral on the hill.

The view of catastrophic Nagasaki City from Urakami Cathedral.

The Marian statue of Urakami is in fact the head of a Madonna statue that survived the Nagasaki atomic bomb. Located in the Urakami Catholic chapel, the statue was destroyed during the bombing and buried in the rubble.

A replacement was built in 1959, after a serious debate between Nagasaki city government and the congregation.

The city government suggested preserving the destroyed cathedral as a historical heritage, and offered alternate site for a new church. However, Christians in Nagasaki strongly wanted to rebuild their cathedral on the original place for their historical reasons.
The place is a symbol of the persecution and their suffering.
