故、將治天下之間、平群臣之祖・名志毘臣、立于歌垣、取其袁祁命將婚之美人手。其孃子者、菟田首等之女・名大魚也。爾袁祁命亦立歌垣。於是志毘臣歌曰、
意富美夜能 袁登都波多傳 須美加多夫祁理
如此歌而、乞其歌末之時、袁祁命歌曰、
意富多久美 袁遲那美許曾 須美加多夫祁禮
爾志毘臣、亦歌曰、
意富岐美能 許許呂袁由良美 淤美能古能 夜幣能斯婆加岐 伊理多多受阿理
於是王子、亦歌曰、
斯本勢能 那袁理袁美禮婆 阿蘇毘久流 志毘賀波多傳爾 都麻多弖理美由
爾志毘臣愈忿、歌曰、
意富岐美能 美古能志婆加岐 夜布士麻理 斯麻理母登本斯 岐禮牟志婆加岐 夜氣牟志婆加岐
爾王子、亦歌曰、
意布袁余志 斯毘都久阿麻余 斯賀阿禮婆 宇良胡本斯祁牟 志毘都久志毘
如此歌而、鬪明各退。明旦之時、意祁命・袁祁命二柱議云「凡朝廷人等者、旦參赴於朝廷、晝集於志毘門。亦今者志毘必寢、亦其門無人。故、非今者難可謀。」卽興軍圍志毘臣之家、乃殺也。
於是、二柱王子等、各相讓天下。意祁命讓其弟袁祁命曰「住於針間志自牟家時、汝命不顯名者、更非臨天下之君。是既汝命之功。故吾雖兄、猶汝命先治天下。」而、堅讓。故不得辭而、袁祁命先治天下
≪英訳≫
At that time, as he was about to rule the land, a minister named Shibi, a descendant of the He-guri clan, stood at Utagaki (gathering of men and women who sang courtship songs to each other). He took the hand of a beautiful woman named Ohowo(大魚 オホヲ), who was to marry Woke(ヲケ). This woman was the daughter of the chief of Uda. Woke(ヲケ) also stood at the Utagaki. Shibi composed a song:
‘The small side of the palace's outstretched is crooked ;
So sings Shibi, he requested the final line of this song, Woke(ヲケ) sang:
‘The corners are crooked because the carpenter’s work was poor.’
Shibi then sang again:
‘The prince’s heart is leisurely,
Not entering the encircled fence of many layers,
Standing by the fence of firewood, by the eaves.
There he will stand, that is all.’
The prince also sang:
‘When I see the waves breaking on the rocks where the tide flows in,
I see my wife standing near the fish that play.
She stands there.’
Shibi, growing angrier, sang:
The fence of the child on Mt. Ibuki, The fence of my beauty, Is made of eight-fold twisted bamboo, That cannot be cut or burned.
‘The fence made by the prince is covered with knots,
Bound together with interlacing; it is a fence that will not break.’
The prince sang:
‘Oh, the fishermen who thrust the tuna with long spears!
When the fish becomes fierce, your hearts will be anxious.
Tuna, thrust the tuna!’
Thus, they exchanged poems throughout the night and eventually separated. The next morning, Okewoke and Oho-wo consulted with each other and said, ‘All the people at the court go to the court in the morning and gather at Shibi’s house during the day. At this time, Shibi is surely asleep, and his gate will be unguarded. If we don’t seize this opportunity, it will be difficult to plan anything.’
So they raised an army and besieged Shibi’s house and killed him.
Then the two princes relinquished the realm to each other. Okewoke relinquished it to his younger brother, Wo-ke’s command, saying, ‘When you lived in the house of the clan of Shijimu in Harima Province, if you did not make your name known, you would not have become the ruler of the realm. It was by your accomplishments that you became ruler, so though I am your elder brother, you should be the one to rule the realm first.’ And he firmly insisted. Thus, Wo-ke’s command became ruler of the realm first.
≪この英文の和訳≫
清寧(せいねい)天皇が天下を統治しようとされたとき、臣下であるシビの子孫であるシビの臣(おみ)が、＊歌垣の場で、神々の意志に従って婚姻を結ぶことになった美しい女性であるオホヲの手を取りました。この女性は、ウダの首長であるオホの娘でした。その後、ヲケの命も歌垣に立ちました。シビは次のように詠みました：
御殿のちいさい方の出張りは、隅が曲つている
と歌つて、その歌の末句を乞うと、ヲケの命が歌う、
大工が下手へただったので隅が曲つているのだ
シビがまた歌う、
王子の心がのんびりしていて、
臣下の幾重にも圍(かこ)った柴垣に
入らずにおられます。
ここで王子がまた歌います、
潮の寄る瀬の浪の碎けるところを見れば
遊んでいるシビ魚の傍に
妻が立つているのが見える。
シビがいよいよ怒いかつて歌う、
王子の作つた柴垣は、
節だらけに結び廻してあつて、
切れる柴垣の燒ける柴垣です
ここに王子がまた歌う、
大おおきい魚の鮪(しび)を突く海人よ、
その魚が荒れたら心恋しいだろう
鮪(しび)を突く鮪(しび)の臣(おみ)よ
このように、彼らは夜通し詠み合い、別れました。翌朝、オケの命(みこと)とオホヲの命は協議し「朝廷の人々は朝に朝廷に参加し、昼にはシビの家に集まります。今、シビはおそらく寝ているでしょうし、その門は無人でしょう。この機会を逃さないようにしなければ」と話し合い、軍を興してシビの家を包囲し、彼を討ちました。
その後、二人の王子は国を互いに譲り合いました。オケの命は弟のヲケの命に譲り、「播磨の国のシジムの家に住んでいたとき、あなたが名前を顕さなかったら、国の統治者にはなり得なかったでしょう。あなたの功績により、あなたがまず国を統治すべきです」と述べ、堅く譲りました。その結果、ヲケの命が最初に国を統治することとなりました。
