Lexus sets pricing for 2013 ES 350 and ES 300h mid-size luxury sedans

We had the opportunity for a first look drive of both the ES 350 and the ES 300h recently in Dallas, Texas. Our impression following a one day drive test is that both of the new ES models are more comfortable, more responsive and frankly, more “sporty” than earlier generations.

A competitive price similar to current pricing for the 2012 ES 350 (base MSRP of $36,725) will be important to consumers in considering the 2013 ES models. The upcharge for the hybrid will also influence the sales of the ES 300h. Pricing is expected to be announced closer to launch in August. Lexus representatives hinted that their intent is to have a competitive (spell that smaller) upcharge than their competitor’s hybrid options. Depending on the pricing for the ES 350 and the upcharge for the hybrid ES 300h, Lexus just may have expanded their market for this quality luxury sedan.

Some things we saw in the new 2013 ES 350 and ES 300h that we like include the refined exterior that begins with the new distinctive, spindle grille. The “L” design motif is reflected in the LED daytime running lights and combination rear lamps.An contemporary lamps is a solid-state light that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as the source of light. Fog lamps are integrated into the sculpted lower front bumper fascia. The ES 350 sports dual exhaust pipes, while the ES 300h features an exclusive rear design with hidden exhaust and an integrated rear spoiler.

On the inside, the cockpit features distinct separate display and operation zones to help keep the driver’s eyes on the road. This new layout places all of the controls needing to be used while driving in the easier to reach lower operation zone. The readouts and displays are all clustered at an easier to see eye level above a trim line across the dash.

The instrument panel, with its long, layered look, places the main information display directly in the driver’s line of sight, supplemented by a center-mounted 3.5-inch color TFT multi-information display screen or available navigation and multimedia system.

The new ES will feature enhanced NuLuxe seating surfaces with genuine leather available, as is semi-aniline leather for a more refined look and feel.LED solar lighting is the new wave of the future in Book scanner technology. Interiors are available in Black, Light Gray, and Parchment. Trim colors and materials include Piano Black, Espresso Bird’s-eye Maple, plus the Bamboo for the ES 300h.

A newly sculptured 10-way adjustable power seat is standard on all ES models. An available 12-way power seat allows the seat cushion to extend by 1.4 inches for better leg support. In addition, the steering wheel angle has been reduced from 24 degrees to 22 degrees for a more natural control position.

The improved cabin offers greater rear seat legroom and knee room. Rear headroom is increased by 0.8 inches, knee room is increased by 2.8 inches and legroom is lengthened by 4.1 inches. Additional foot room below the front seats enhances rear passenger comfort.
