Luke 17:1-19 ESV [1] And he said to his disciples, “Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come! [2] It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin. [3] Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, [4] and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.” [5] The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” [6] And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. [7] “Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’? [8] Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’? [9] Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? [10] So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’” [11] On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. [12] And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance [13] and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” [14] When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. [23] And they will say to you, ‘Look, there!’ or ‘Look, here!’ Do not go out or follow them. [24] For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day. [25] But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. [26] Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. [27] They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. [28] Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot—they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, [29] but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all— [30] so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed. [31] On that day, let the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back. [32] Remember Lot’s wife. [33] Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it. [34] I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed. One will be taken and the other left. [35] There will be two women grinding together. SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

When Jesus says to forgive someone seven times in a day, he doesn’t mean you should keep count and then unleash your wrath after someone wrongs you seven times. This passage (verses 3-4) is meant to show us that we need to always forgive.

Jesus says we should have the attitude of a servant of God (verses 7-10). Our service is not motivated by potential reward but instead by sheer gratefulness at the opportunity to serve God.

On Jesus' travels, 10 lepers stand at a distance and beg for mercy. This was customary, as lepers were not allowed to come close to anyone.

Not only does Jesus show love to the lepers, he asks them to show their faith in action by going to see the priests before they are even healed. All 10 men went and were healed before they reached the temple. However, the story doesn't end there. Only one man comes back to thank Jesus for the miracle, and he was a Samaritan. If you remember from previous posts, Samaritans and Jews held bitter hatred toward one another and did not get along at all. Jews nicknamed them "dogs" and refused to do business with the Samaritans. This feud dates back as far as 722 BC.

Jesus teaches people to be prepared for when the "Son of Man" (a nickname Jesus used to refer to himself) will return to judge the world and bring his followers to heaven.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

We need to be very careful that we do not lead anyone into temptation. But, if we do, we need to ask for forgiveness and turn away from our sin.

We also need to forgive people when they sin against us. This can be difficult, but realizing that God has forgiven us enables us to forgive others.

We often ask God to do things for us, but we don't stop and give him praise and thanks when he does. We need to be like the Samaritan leper and give God the glory for the good in our life.

We need to live our lives in anticipation of Jesus' return. This means our faith will be tested. Verses 33-34 remind us that we must be willing to let go -- to let go of material possessions, family, loved ones, even our physical lives, in order to gain eternity in heaven with Jesus.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

Do you beg God to do things for you, but then forget to give him praise or credit when he does? It is not enough to have faith that Jesus will come through, we should give glory to him when he does. If Jesus has done something amazing in your life that you never thanked him for, take time to do just that.

We need to live lives of willing service and gratitude towards God. Are you serving God to your fullest ability or are you holding back? How can you change that today? Are you willing to let go of everything on earth that matters to you?
