Don’t Step On It.

The other day I tried to make an empty tissue box flat by stepping on it and my wife wondered what I was doing.
She pointed to the instructions on the back of the box on how to make it flat, step by step.
Japanese packages are so easy to open and discard, as they are consumer and eco-friendly.
I think other countries need to learn from Japan.

先日、空になったティシュー・ボックスをつぶそうと思い、
足で踏んでいたところ、妻にティシュー・ボックスの裏に
「箱のつぶし方」の説明があることを教えられました
日本製のパッケージは、とても開けやすく、つぶしやすくできていて
エコが進んでいます。他国も日本から学ぶべきですね。

Stop Laughing

We enjoy watching American movies at the theater.
Sometimes, while we are watching a movie and there is a funny scene,
my wife and I start laughing.
But since the Japanese audience has to read the subtitles first, their reaction time is slow.
So at times, we are the only two people laughing and it feels kind of strange.


よく映画館に洋画を見に行きます。
おもしろい場面で私と妻は、大きな声で笑ってしまいます
しかし、日本人の人たちは、字幕を読んでいるので、笑うタイミングが
私たちより、少し遅いので、私たち2人だけで笑っていることが、しばしば…
ちょっと不思議な空気が漂います。

Say Sorry

On a recent trip to America and because of heavy snow,
my domestic flights were cancelled or delayed a few times.
However, the staff at the airport never really apologized for the inconvenience
and just said “the flight has been delayed.”
In Japan, people usually say sorry even when we are not at fault.
In my experience, Americans never say sorry if they are not at fault.


アメリカで飛行機が雪のために遅れ、国内線はキャンセルになった際、
飛行場のスタッフは、遅延とキャンセルによる足止めに謝ることなく
「飛行機が遅れます」とのアナウンスのみ
日本では、自分の過ちではないにしても、業務上謝ります。
私の経験から、アメリカ人は、自分の過ちでない限り、
決して「すいません」とは言いません

The Best Workers

Yuriko’s Trip to America

アメリカ出張中にいくつかの空港を利用して、アメリカ空港職員の仕事ぶりと
日本の職員の仕事ぶりの違いが目に付きました。
サンドウィッチ片手に床にモップをかけている人、乗客が待っているにも関わらず
おしゃべりに夢中な人、マイペースで決して急がずにゆっくり仕事をしている人
日本では、絶対に見ることのない光景ですよね


I used many airports while traveling in America and noticed that people who worked at these airports were different from the ones we see at Japanese airports. For example, I saw workers eating while working, chatting with coworkers while passengers were waiting to be served, and moving slowly without having any sense of urgency to finish their work. These kinds of workers can never find jobs in Japan.

アメリカ出張中、見知らぬ人が自然に話しかけてくれました
たとえば、タクシーの運転手は日本について興味深く質問してくれました。
そのタクシーは、日本では見ることのないボコボコの車体で、
ドアと窓は開かないし、シートは破けてましたけど
運転手が親切なので車内では心地よい温かさを感じました
人間味あふれるドライブでした


While traveling in the U.S., I noticed how people started conversation with me so easily and naturally. For example, taxi drivers asked me questions about Japan. It was kind of interesting to ride on taxis with dented bodies; doors or windows that did not open properly, and seats that were torn. But once inside, it felt warm and nice because the drivers were kind and friendly. I felt the human touch!
