ポンペイ　Pompeii

ポンペイは、ナポリ近郊にあった古代ローマの都市でしたが、79年のヴェスヴィオ山（標高1,281m) 噴火による火砕流によって、４～６ｍ地中に埋もれていました。

1599年に最初の再発見、さらに1748年により広範囲の再発見まで、ポンペイは完璧に消滅したと考えられていました。

Pompeii was an ancient Roman city near Modern Naples.
Pompeii and many of the inhabitants were buried under 4 to 6m of volcanic ash and pumice stone before they could excape in the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD79.

The site was eventually lost until its initial rediscovery in 1599 and broader rediscovery in 1748.

　6:50amホテルを出て、ポンペイへ日帰り旅行に行ったお話です～。
朝早いと言っておくと、ホテルも慣れていて、テイクアウト用に、パン・リンゴ・飲み物を用意しておいてくれました。

テルミニ駅前の観光案内でツアーを予約、昼食込みで€126(￥16,000くらい）でした。当日、日本語ガイドがいないということで、英語ガイドを頼んでいたのですが、スペイン語と兼任のようで、前日のバチカン美術館ほどではなかったものの、スペイン語の方が聞き取りやすい感じでした　

I booked the tour through a tourist guide in front of Termini station. It cost me EURO 126 (about 16,000 yen) including lunch.
I asked for an English guide because there was no Japanese guide that day.

I left the hotel at 6:50 am and took a day trip to Pompeii.
I told the front desk the day before that I would leave the hotel early the next morning. The hotel seemed to be used to it and prepared bread, apples and drinks to go.

The guide spoke both English and Spanish, but even with my poor Spanish ability, Spanish was easier to understand than English.

↑ここで、トイレ休憩をとりました。
手前のご夫婦と、実はこの後の昼食時に偶然同席となり、お話する機会がありました。
ご夫婦はカナダのモントリオールからということで、英語を話せると思っていたら、なんと奥様から　'Can you speak French?'（フランス語を話せる？）と聞かれました。

We took a toilet break here.
At lunch after this, I happened to be with the couple in the foreground of the photo, and we had a chance to talk.
Since the couple is from Montreal, Canada, I thought they could speak English, but to my surprise, the wife asked me, "Can you speak French?."

モントリオールと言えば、ケベック州。彼女によると、ケベックはフランス語がメイン。彼女は今後の人生で、英語は使わないつもりだったようです　ヴェスヴィオ山の噴火の話をした時も、英語が通じず、香港に居たことのある英語が堪能なご主人が、私の英語を通訳してくれました　
「カナダの公用語は英語とフランス語」と、塾で生徒に教えていましたが、ここまでだとは知りませんでした

Montreal is famous for Quebec.  According to her, French is the main language in Quebec, so she was not going to use English for the rest of her life.  When I talked about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, her husband, who had been in Hong Kong and was fluent in English, translated my English into French.
I taught students at Juku (a supplementary school) that "the official languages of Canada are English and French," but I didn't know this much.

野球帽の男性が、ポンペイ現地の英語のガイドさん。
ご年配なので、日蔭を探しながら、ハアハア言いながらのガイドで、少し心配になりました。日なたは、本当に暑くて、真夏だともっと暑いのかな～。遺跡巡りは寒いくらいの季節の方が、人も少なく、絶対おすすめと、改めて思いました。日が長いのは良いのだけれど…

A man with a baseball cap is a local English guide in Pompeii.
I was a little worried because he looked too old to guide in the quite hot sun.
I would definitely recommend visiting the ruins in the cold season because there would be fewer people and it would be easier to walk.
