熊野本宮大社

熊野本宮大社は、熊野三山（本宮・速玉・那智各大社）の中心です。3本足の神聖な鳥・八咫烏（やたがらす）は、神武天皇（橿原宮で660BCに即位と伝わる）が東征のとき、熊野から大和に入る山中を導いたと言われていて、「導きの神」として崇められてきたそうです

It is the head of Kumano-sanzan; Hongu, Hayatma and Nachi.   You can find a three-legged crow like the one on the banner all around the shine. It is called "Yatagarasu" and has been revered as "a deity of guidance".

鳥居をくぐって、境内の階段を上ると、ご本殿の上四社です。1889年（明治22年）の洪水で、熊野川と音無川、岩田川が合流する中洲の大斎原（おおゆのはら…読みにくい）にあった多くの社殿が被害を受けましたが、1891年に、残った上四社がこの高台に移されたとのこと。境内は神聖なため、撮影禁止です。残念

Going through the gateway and up the steps, you can enter the main part of the shrine.  Though the main hall used to stand in Oyunohara on a sandbar along the Kumano River and the Otonashi River, the Iwata River, most part of the shrine was washed away by the flood in 1889. Remaining four wooden shrines were moved to the present location on the height in 1891. It is forbidden to take photos here because the compound inside the gate is so sacred. A little bit disappointing!

熊野本宮大社入口前にある、本宮と熊野古道に関するインフォメーションセンターです。関連パンフレットや地図も充実しているので、最初に訪問するのがおすすめです。無料の資料館もあるので、熊野の歴史を学びたい方には最適です

It is an information center about Kumano Hongu Shrine and the Kumano pilgrimage routes, located in front of the entrance of the shrine. As you can get useful brochures and maps written in English, you should visit it first of all.

「鳥居は神々が住む神聖な地への入り口を示すので、入る時に一回、出るときにも同様にお辞儀してください」と、英語の案内版に書いてありました。日本人の私も忘れがちなので、気を付けなければ

This big gate is called O-torii (meaning a big gate/34m high). The torii (a gate of shrine) marks the entrance into the sacred grounds where deities reside.　So please bow once when entering and again when when exiting.

大鳥居をくぐって進むと、平安時代にも壮麗な本宮のあった大斎原に、当時をしのぶ二基の石祠があります。なんか悲しい

Going through the big gate, you'll reach here where the main hall used to be even 1,000 years ago!
