  There  were   several   parcels   wrapped 
in   white  tissue  paper,   and   one   very 
large  box  with  the  inscription : 
  " For  Fräulein  Maria  for  Distribution."
Surrounded  by  the  children,   I  unpacked  
it,  and  out  came  eight  pairs  of  woollen  
mittens,    eight    beautiful,   soft,    grey 
Wetterflecks,  and   eight   pairs  of   heavy 
boots.   This  was   a   great  surprise,  and 
with   a   guilty   heart,   I  hardly   dared  
look  at  Baroness  Matilda.

薄葉紙に包まれた小荷物も幾つかありました．
そのひとつはとても大きな箱で、
   『フロイライン・マリア宛、分配用』
と銘打ちされていました．子どもたちに取り
囲まれ、私は包装を開けてみました．すると
出てきたのは、毛糸のミトン（手袋）８組、
美しく、ソフトなグレー色のレインコートが
８着、厚手のブーツが８足．これには、さす
がに驚きました．そして、後ろめたくもあり
ました．もうほとんど、マチルダ夫人の方に
目を向ける勇気はありませんでした．
