"White Roof" and "Green Roof"
Many parts of the world are facing environmental challenges. My hometown is Beijing and the serious problem of smog has plagued the city. Based on the Beating the Heat in the World’s Big Cities article by Michon Scott on August 1, 2006, there are two kinds of roof which may provide a solution to it. In this article, it is to argue that “green roof” is more advantageous for my hometown by presenting some advantages to using it over the other.

Despite the fact that the white roof offers the greatest economic return, the green roof controls runoff and prevents air pollution. White roof can reflect the sun, so as to cool the building. In addition, its installation and maintenance costs are much lower than the green roof (Scott, 2006). But some of the benefits of green roofs can not be provided by the white roof: vegetation helps the city purify the air and provide a quiet place for the residents. They can even be used as sustainable urban farms to reduce the amount of food imported from outside the city, resulting in a chain reaction that can withstand climate change and traffic pressure in a wider area, and a green roof can also store water in the plant. It is effective in reducing urban heat and runoff (Scott, 2006). These systems can also filter water containing less contaminants. So green roof can effectively reduce urban air pollution. Although the cost is higher than the white roof, the green roof can have longer life as it protects the roof surface.

Therefore, the green roof has more advantages in the improvement of environment in my hometown plagued by smog. Nowadays, the recurrence of it in Beijing has deep-seated reasons in China's rapid industrialization, and urbanization process. High energy consumption, high emissions, heavy pollution, overcapacity, unreasonable layout, excessive energy consumption, coal-based energy structure, and rapid growth in motor vehicle ownership lead to a substantial increase in pollution emissions. The smog of Beijing began to intensify, and got out of control in recent years. The environment has self-healing ability. With dilution, diffusion, oxidation and other physical and chemical effects, pollutants gradually disappear, which is self-purification capacity of environment. But the pollutants accumulated to a certain number and went over the limits of environmental self-purification. The green roof covered with vegetation on the roof is functioning as a park in the city to improve self-healing ability by reducing the heat island effect that causes the city's temperature rise, and to prevent floods by absorbing rainwater. Also, PM can be removed from the air while the plants are reducing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen, and improve air quality. Thus, green roof is conducive to slow the smog in Beijing.

Although “white roof” is an inexpensive and effective roof in heat absorption and is easy to operate, “green roof” is complicated but useful not only in urban heat but also in air pollution as well. Thus, the latter is more effective in improvement of environment in my hometown.
