It is really my honor to be here to give a presentation for you. Today, the topic I want to share with you is how the feudal society oppress the laboring class. From the brief introduction of China history, we can see that the feudal society had been existing in China about 2100 years. During this super long time, the feudal system had been strengthened by every dynasty’s emperor. Almost every Chinese is proud of their country’s long history and splendid culture. However, there is a dark side behind it too. According to the feudal society depicted by Lu Xun, it’s hard to imagine for us that the farmers and other laboring class had suffered in ancient China. Most of time, they lived on the margin of survival because of the unequal treatment and merciless oppression of the rulers. From my perspective, the feudal society exploits the populous mainly by way of mind and thought control. In the following time, I will support my statement by making use of Lu Xun’s two famous works. They are The True Story of Ah Q and Preface to "Call to Arms".

First, let me give a brief introduction to the some features of feudal society in ancient China.

In culture, people are completely controlled by the ruling class. People can not freely express their minds or thoughts especially those arguments against the ruling class. In the economy, most of the laboring class haven’t land because of the feudal land ownership. In politics, centralized feudal monarchy make the members of laboring class in ancient China almost haven’t any politic rights. They are expected to adhere to the instructions of the authority and rules with absolution obedience.

The True Story of Ah Q mainly narrates the miserable life of Ah Q and the ugly features of feudal society of China. In this article, the protagonist Ah Q is one whose mind is deeply poisoned by the feudal culture. He is from the peasant class with little education and no definite work, but never have a thought about the roots of his tragic life. Ah Q is a bully of the less fortune but fearful of those people who are above him in the rank, strength or power. He is famous for his ‘mental victories’ when he suffer humiliation. What’ more, Ah Q later devoted himself to the revolution with the hope of changing his fate though he doesn’t know anything about revolution. In the end, Ah Q was executed for treason. Ah Q’ tragedy is a true portrayal of life of lowering class members in that time. They are eager to change their situation, but with the feudal ideas in their mind, they are bound to accomplish nothing.

Preface to "Call to Arms" also proves the side impacts of feudal cultures. In the preface, Lu Xun told us where the stories come from. Lu Xun went to Japan to study medicine with the hope that he could cure patients who had been wrongly treated like his father. However, he changed his mind after seeing a movie about a Chinese’s execution in Japan. He realized that medical science was not so important. The most important thing that the people of China in that time need is to change spirit. Lu Xun compares the feudal system in China to an iron house without windows. The iron house extremely restrained the people’s minds and sights, and people almost have no any chance to get away from it. Most important of all, the people inside the iron house were falling into sleep, they have no idea what happened to them at all. Owing to the pollution of feudal culture and the mind control, most of the people in that time are blindness and ignorant. They are apathetic, and dare not to stand up like the people of western country against the ruling class. Therefore, Lu Xun chose to become a champion of democracy to wake up Chinese people through writing.

OK, this is my today’s speech. After discussing the features of feudal society and and explaining it by The True Story of Ah Q and Preface to "Call to Arms". I hope you all can have a better understand about the oppression that the ruling class had exerted upon the laboring class. Thank you for your attention.
