Mathematical concepts are abstract, so it can be very hard to study mathematics for four years in college. To choose mathematics as major is certainly challenging, but I still make up my mind to understand this sophisticated while beautiful discipline. Why? I would like to explain the reasons for learning math in a broader view as follow.

First of all, mathematics can provide the indispensable knowledge which will help us to grasp the newest invention and progress in modern society, and thus adapting ourselves better in the world and being more likely to become what we want to be and making a contribution to human society. One strong confirmation would be the application of mathematics in today’s science and technology. For example, some products of high-technology like satellite and nuclear power station, typical of their high speed, high automatic, high quality and high efficiency, are undoubtedly achieved by mathematical models and mathematical methods as well as the control of computer. Besides, many other fields, such as product quality control, economic and scientific prediction and management, information processing, resource development and environmental protection, all require the use of mathematics. In many cases, it is no longer simply a complementary tool, but has become the critical thinking and methods of many important issues, and many of the results arising therefrom, which quietly spread around us, changing our lifestyle. As it were, Math can be said to have a profound impact on modern society, and we are living in an era of mathematics.

The above is talking from the perspective of the needs to study mathematics in reality. However, one other reason, actually the main attraction of mathematics in my eyes, is Math as an art and language, who having its own internal dynamic, power and subtle rules of development. The impetus for math is the tons of emerging mathematical problems and mathematical conjectures. Once a problem is put forward, a conjecture is figured out, and then solved or testified, math moves forward and evolve accordingly. The excellence and particularity of mathematics has won itself many good reputations. “Richard Feynman, echoing the thought of Galileo, has said: ‘Nature talks to us in the language of mathematics’” (Gullberg). Mathematics is not equal to the rigid and prim calculations, on the contrary, “Genuine mathematics, then, its methods and its concepts, by contrast with soulless calculation, constitutes one of the finest expressions of the human spirit” (Gullberg). “We use mathematics to systematize our experience of the world, to give it order and coherence, and thereby to enable us to predict and perhaps control future events” (Gullberg). Mathematics definitely plays a key role in the development of human thought and society.

In light of its universality and practicability, one can choose to learn a minor or even try to obtain dual degree. For instance, degree programs in the mathematical sciences and academic disciplines that require mathematical and computational skills, such as engineering disciplines, applied and natural mathematical sciences, life science related fields, public health sciences, computer and information sciences, statistical sciences, financial mathematics, earth sciences, and physical sciences.

As set forth, mathematics are utilized in multitudinous discipline of science and technology, of engineering and of today’s data-driven industries. People with mathematical talent and training are provided with a wide variety of career opportunities. Almost all fields need the help of outstanding mathematicians, and some growing fields to consider would be like Systems Biology, Data Mining and Data Privacy, Materials Science, Computer Animation and Digital Imaging, Finance and Economics, Ecology/Epidemiology/Environment and Climatology. Set biology as an example, math has been discovered to be very useful in solving biological problems, ranging from nearly everything in life science such as the functioning of our body systems and the battles toward many diseases. With the impetus of math, biological data are growing fast and powerful computers are becoming more available, providing the converging forces for the growth of biology. In terms of the possible workplace, according to the website The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), some specific examples of organizations, corporations, and research institutions that hire mathematicians and computational scientists are:

  • Government labs, research offices and agencies
  • Federally funded contractors
  • Engineering research organizations
  • Computer information and software firms
  • Energy systems firms
  • Electronics and computer manufacturers
  • Consulting firms
  • Aerospace and transportation equipment manufacturers
  • Financial service and investment management firms
  • Transportation service providers
  • Communications services providers
  • Chemical or pharmaceutical manufacturers
  • Medical device companies
  • Producers of petroleum and petroleum products
  • Academic institutions and research institutes
  • Consumer products companies

It can be seen from above that the range of options are actually quite wide, whether non-profit or for-profit, large or small, working independently or on a team, and how much customer contact you prefer to have. Just like students from other majors, the final choice of career depends on your personal traits, your nature, your preferences and some external factors. In addition, the salaries of professional mathematicians and computational scientists are impressive. Though differ from fields to fields, most mid or senior level professionals can earn up to $150,000. At present, the demand for mathematics graduates, both at home and abroad, has increased significantly. In particular, according to the latest statistics, in the top ten majors whose demands for graduates are largest in Beijing, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics top the lists. Another example would be America’s hottest career – actuaries, most of them have professional mathematics background.

In order to become such a professional on math, one must seek for the best university for math learning. According to the 2014 QS World University Rankings-- Mathematics Rankings, the top five are all in the United States. They are Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, Stanford University, Princeton University and University of California. Though one of the best universities in China-- Peking University, ranks 18 in this ranking, there is a huge gap between China and America’s math education. The United States, as the research center of math education, has set up lots of master station and doctor station of mathematics education in most universities. American universities’ research on university mathematics teaching and education is systematic and scientific, having the aid of modern technology to study university mathematics education and pedagogy. They emphasize on developing Computer Based Education (CBE), taking advantage of computer to implement, organize, manage and remediate teaching. While Chinese textbooks tend to be obsolete and non-specific, with much fewer master stations, doctor stations and seminars.

To conclude, choosing mathematics as a major is not easy, but mathematics still appeals to masses of people due to its own unique charm and the favourable job prospects. Those who have the talent, interest or background in math should look for the field they really love, find the best resources and work hard on that.
