The costume designer of it is Andrea Lauer. And the work of her includes musicals such as roadway's Bring It On, STREB's: Forces and the 2012 London Cultural Olympiad and style design in Rolling Stone, Vogue, Interview, (umass.edu, 2008). The design choices she made in the production is effective as it is good in reflecting the main characters personality. All of the main characters have obvious characters, which is easy to be remembered by the audience. Thus, the costume design work well in supporting the production of this musical. The main information that I can gain from the costume design choices made by Andrea Lauer is that each character has totally different characters by the way they dress. However, something didn’t work as the way that John Gallagher dress should be manifested in a different manner to show different moods of him when he experiences ups and rises of life such as drug abuse, and lost love.
The lighting designer is Kevin Adams. The work of him is effective as the design choices made in the production is overall dark and gloomy, but it is also changing when the atmosphere and plots of the musical change, which is effective in supporting the production. Also, I can gain information of plot development from the lighting design choices made.
The director of it is Michael Mayer, and after examining the director’s use of specific elements of staging within the production, there are two things that stick out in my mind: the performance of the song "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" by the entire company with guitars after the cast bow and the curtain rises; the performance of Green Day’s lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong who also takes part in the creation, and who also for a few times has participated in the performance, and starred as St. Jimmy. Thus, this special form to present the song has made the show memorable.
In the final moments of the play, Johnny remarks that he lost the person he loved, but he choose to live inside the struggle between anger and love one year later. Those events related to the central conflict--- confusion of youth. But the central conflict was partly resolved. It is because that Johnny reached a reconcile of anger and love caused by the era in his own heart.
The University of Illinois Department of Theatre chooses to produce Iago’s Plot as the theme reflected in the Iago’s Plot is quite profound. Thus, this production of Iago’s Plot communicated to the audience is the loss and confusion brought by the times to the young generation. This theme appeals to me. It presents a lost generation around us: some of them are the hippies, living in this chaotic international political environment, who is eager to shape their own destiny. But because of the lack of ideals, or their ideals were forced into the blind patriotism, they find that they have missed the beautiful youth.
