小林君は、なんだか涙が出そうになるのを、やっとがまんして、ギュッと壮二君の手をにぎりました。

Kobayashi grasped Souji's hand forcing back his tears.
「きみたちのことを明智先生がお聞きになったら、どんなにお喜びになるかもしれないですよ。ええ、きみたちの探偵団でぼくをたすけてください。みんなで何か手がかりをさがしだしましょう。
"I don't know how he got pleased If my master Akechi heard you. Yes, please help me. Let's search a clue to find him.
けれどね、きみたちはぼくとちがうんだから、危険なことはやらせませんよ。もしものことがあると、みんなのおとうさんやおかあさんに申しわけないですからね。
I won't let you do something dangerous. If something happened to you I would be very sorry to your parents.
しかし、ぼくが今考えているのは、ちっとも危険のない探偵方法です。きみ、『聞きこみ』っての知ってますか。いろんな人の話をきいてまわって、どんな小さなことでものがさないで、うまく手がかりをつかむ探偵方法なんです。
But my investigation plan is not dangerous at all. Do you know 'legwork'? It's an investigative method, asking people about all sorts of things to find something important.

それにはね、おとといの晩、先生を連れだした女の人相や服装、それから自動車の行った方角もわかっているんだから、その方角に向かって、ぼくらが今の聞きこみをやればいいんですよ。

店の小僧さんでもいいし、ご用聞きでもいいし、郵便配達さんだとか、そのへんに遊んでいる子どもなんかつかまえて、あきずに聞いてまわるんですよ。

ここでは方角がわかっていても、先になるほど道がわかれていて、見当をつけるのがたいへんだけれど、人数が多いから大じょうぶだ。道がわかれるたびに、ひとりずつ、そのほうへ行けばいいんです。

「ええ、どうぞ、ぼくもいっしょに外へ出ましょう。」

"Yeah, go ahead. Let me go with you."
そして、ふたりは、明智夫人のゆるしをえたうえ、ポーチのところへ出たのですが、壮二君はいきなり門の外へかけだして行ったかと思うと、まもなく、十人の探偵団員を引きつれて、門内へひきかえしてきました。
The two of them went out to the porch with Mrs. Akechi's permission. Souji ran out of the gate and came back with ten detective boys.
見ると、小学校上級生ぐらいの、健康で快活な少年たちでした。
They were healthy, cheeful high grade elementary school boys.
小林君は、壮二君の紹介で、ポーチの上から、みんなにあいさつしました。そして、明智探偵捜査の手段について、こまごまとさしずをあたえました。
Introduced by Souji, Kobayashi greeted them from the porch. And he detailed how to do the legwork for the detective Akechi.
むろん一同大賛成です。
「小林団長ばんざーい。」
Of course the all boys were happy about the plan.
"Yey for the chief Kobayashi!"
もうすっかり、団長に祭りあげてしまって、うれしさのあまり、そんなことをさけぶ少年さえありました。
There was a boy made him the chief shouting like that.
「じゃ、これから出発しましょう。」
そして、一同は少年団のように、足なみそろえて、明智邸の門外へ消えていくのでした。
"Then let's get it started."
They went out of the Akechi's house keeping their steps.
