Dali One man’en? That’s why it is so foolish! (Dali takes out and shows me a one-man’en bill…) THIS is the best gift certificate. I can use this anywhere in the country. But when I go to Daimaru and give them this bill and exchange it for a gift certificate of the same amount, the certificate is only good in Daimaru. Why would one willingly exchange cash for a Daimaru gift certificate of the same amount, which is incredibly limited to use? Cash can be used anywhere in the entire country, small shops, big shops, everybody takes it.
ダリちゃん 1万円だって？ だから馬鹿げてるんだ！ (ダリちゃんは1万円札を取り出して僕に見せながら…..) これが最高の商品券だ。この国のどこでも使える。でもわしが大丸に行って、このお札を1万円相当の商品券に交換すると、この商品券は大丸でしか使えない。なんでわざわざ現金を同じ額面の大丸商品券に交換するかなあ？ 使用が極端に制限されるのに。現金はこの国のどこでも使える。小さなお店でも大きなお店でも、みんな受け取ってくれるよ。

Dali You fool! You cannot get the face value of the gift certificate. I believe there is a 4% charge. Plus it’s an extra inconvenience to go all the way to a Kinken shop for the exchange.

Just give him the same amount in cash.” Mother says, “No! We will give him a gift certificate because it shows we care.” I say, “No! It shows nothing of the kind! If cash doesn’t show we care, then neither will a gift certificate! Gift certificates are the stupidest choice! Mother, you are a fool!”

Dali Daimaru is smart, but their gift-certificate-buying customers are so stupid! Why would Mother willingly exchange cash for a cash-equivalent with terrible restrictions? Why would anybody with a brain or even the slightest bit of common sense, do something like this? Regrettably, gift certificates are very popular in the US. I see that it is also true in Japan.
ダリちゃん 大丸は賢いね。でも商品券を購入するお客はほんと馬鹿だね！ 母さんはなぜ現金を、制約だらけの現金同等物に交換したがるんだろう？ 脳があるなら、あるいはほんの少しでも常識があるなら、そんなことする？ 残念ながら商品券はアメリカではとても人気。日本でもそうだと思うけど。
