夜が明ける。そして、それとともに険しいアルバニアの山々が、
暗いスリの岩山が、そしてピンダスの内陸の峰が、
半ば霧をまとい、雪のように白い渓流に露を結び、
たくさんの薄暗い紫色の筋で装って
現れる。やがて、たなびいている雲が途切れると、
山の民の住居をあらわにする。
ここでは狼が吠えている、鷲が嘴を砥いでいる。
猛禽類や猛獣、そして荒くれ者どもが現れて、
辺りに嵐を巻き起こし、暮れゆく年を震撼させる。

Morn dawns; and with it stern Albania’s hills,
Dark Suli’s rocks, and Pindus’ inland peak,
Robed half in mist, bedewed with snowy rills,
Arrayed in many a dun and purple streak,
Arise; and, as the clouds along them break,
Disclose the dwelling of the mountaineer:
Here roams the wolf―the eagle whets his beak―
Birds―beasts of prey－and wilder men appear,
And gathering storms around convulse the closing year.
