そしてこれらの言葉については、ここまで歌に織られてきたが
一つの害のない策であるかもしれない。
言葉とともに、流れて過ぎていく景色の彩り、
それを私は捉えようとしている。つかの間、私の
そして人の胸の内を慰めるために。
名声は若者にとっての渇きとなる―しかし私はもう
人々のしかめ面や微笑みを、栄光の運命の喪失や褒賞と
思うほど若くはない。
私は昔も、今も一人で立っている―記憶に残ろうとも、忘れ去られようとも。

And for these words, thus woven into song,
It may be that they are a harmless wile, -
The colouring of the scenes which fleet along,
Which I would seize, in passing, to beguile
My breast, or that of others, for a while.
Fame is the thirst of youth,--but I am not
So young as to regard men's frown or smile
As loss or guerdon of a glorious lot;
I stood and stand alone,--remembered or forgot.

ここまで私は、ふたたび取り上げたテーマを進めてきた、
情け深い吉兆なしに。我われは
かつての我われではないと感じること、そして
あるべき姿ではないと思うこと―心に対して自ら
心を鋼にすること。そして誇り高い注意深さをもって
愛し、または憎み、あるいはあらゆること―
情熱または感情、目的、悲しみまたは熱情―
それは我われの思考を暴君のように支配する精神だが―を隠すこと。

あまねく創造主

しかし、人間の業は終わりにして、ふたたび
私の周りにあまねく創造主について考えさせてくれ。
私が空想で満たしている、終わりが来ないと思わせるほど
長引いている、この文章を中断しよう。
私の頭上の雲は、白いアルプスに傾いている。
私はそれらを貫いて、可能なものはなんでも観察せねばならぬ。
それらの雲が生長しつつある偉大な地域を
歩んでゆきながら。そこでは大地が大気の力を従わせて、
その胸に抱きこもうとしている。

But let me quit man's works, again to read
His Maker's spread around me, and suspend
This page, which from my reveries I feed,
Until it seems prolonging without end.
The clouds above me to the white Alps tend,
And I must pierce them, and survey whate'er
