I wonder whether the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 is real or pseudo.
Many athletes can’t participate in the Olympics in the COVID-19 pandemic because of positive COVID-19 PCR tests. I understand that is useful for preventing the spread of infection. But it is not completely effective. A few PCR tests might be false positive, or false negative. And what is more, some athletes might be in an incubation period.
I doubt that there is fairness in Olympic participation for athletes. There are many countries with a high prevalence of COVID-19. Many athletes of those countries may not be able to participate in the Olympic Games because they are COVID-19 positive. There is concern that would be a kind of discrimination against the persons infected or suspected of being infected.
Is Tokyo complying with the Fundamental Principles of Olympism?
“Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit.”
-Olympic Charter, Fundamental Principles of Olympism, Article IV
If the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 was canceled, unimaginable huge economic losses and damages would occur in Japan. On the other hand, there are many risks of spreading COVID-19 and of the appearance of new VOC (variants of concern) in Japan.
Many people thought “a one year postponement of the Olympic Games is too short, at least two years are needed in a pandemic.” But the Former Prime Minister decided on a one year prolongation, and ignored the advice of others. Many people, of course common people including me, should protest against his decision.
It will be a bitter yet valuable lesson for Japanese people.
We must make decisions by ourselves.
