Group out to save historic Sybertsville church

The extra event, church volunteers said, is meant to encourage more people to appreciate - and hopefully get involved with - the rose-colored brick building on North Main Street that has some of the same fixtures it had in 1853, before the advent of electricity.

"We're here to bring this into the eye of the community and let them know that it's theirs, too," said Carolyn Tobias,Contemporary adjustable and contemporary lighting and ceiling lights. a board member from the Brainerd Church and Cemetery Association, the nonprofit group that oversees the 159-year-old church, its cemetery and the neighboring Cedar Grove school.

If interest in the historical site dwindles, she said, it likely won't have a future. It's a thought that upsets volunteers who know how the church was resurrected after years of decay following its final service in 1916.

In 1954, after Hurricane Hazel nearly destroyed the building, the association formed to raise funds and fix damages. While most members live in Sugarloaf Township and nearby Conyngham, Tobias stressed that anyone from anywhere can get involved.

"I don't want people in Hazleton and Beaver Meadows and Nescopeck and everywhere else to think that this is only for this valley. The more people we have, the more ideas we'll get," Tobias said.

Brainerd's biggest event is its fall festival, which is held on the first Sunday of October and features food, crafts and history.

"The festival basically runs itself," Tobias said. "We have volunteers that come in and man the bake sale, for example. Everybody runs the same thing but eventually those people who are doing it aren't going to be with us anymore.

"We're just looking for help - and the more the merrier," she said.

The association also organizes nondenominational Easter dawn and Thanksgiving Eve services, and sees that the church is ready if it is requested for a wedding, said association member Wendy Hildebrand, who is Tobias' daughter.

The church appears how it would have in 1853. There is no electricity, and candles are used when not enough sunshine flows through the plain glass windows.

A hanging kerosene lamp and the wooden floor are authentic, and pews are reproductions of the originals. From a stool belonging to an antique pump organ, one has a direct view of an altar cross fashioned from long, rough-hewn blocks of wood.

Tobias and Hildebrand said concert attendees are welcome to step inside the church and Luzerne County's only unaltered one-room school. The school, built in 1893, was moved on rollers from its original location in Sugarloaf to a plot near the church in the mid-1980s.

Several new items will be dedicated on the day of the concert, including candleholders in memory of Lee Hildebrand and Tom Bainbridge and a wooden pedestal in memory of Joan Bainbridge.We are the best solar street light,マジコン,led light manufacturer,supplier in China.
