It is possible, perhaps, with the passage of time starting in the late 19th century, the guests may have heard of such local luminaries as the founding fathers Baker brothers, the Morey family amusement ride impresarios and the movie house entrepreneur Bill Hunt. But there are others hidden in history who were not necessarily in show business have helped to make life at the seashore happen all year long.

One such was Allen E. Grace, whose last name still stands out in the Wildwoods of today.

Grace's life is something of a Horatio Alger success story that started in a North Wildwood grocery store and later became the Grace Oil Company, one of the largest businesses in Cape May County.

He met his wife, the former Bertha Bright, in that town and their marriage produced four children, Allen Jr., Kenneth, Pauline and Ethel. Eventually like others who came from near and afar while the then-named Anglesea was sprouting its wings, Grace and his wife migrated to Anglesea and they lived in the 300 east block of 20th Avenue. The borough was a fishing community and Grace, ever the entrepreneur as events will tell, started a grocery store that sold kerosene for cooking, heating and lighting to fishermen and their families.

He advertised his business as a "dealer in groceries, boat supplies and general merchandise"' on New Jersey Avenue and "two separate stores under one roof."

The grocery store, he claimed, "represents the best of everything that comes under the title" and it provided an active delivery service. The growth of the island through individual hard work and perseverance comes to light in a letter sent to the George F. Boyer Museum by Robert Krueger, whose family purchased land at the corner of 12th and New Jersey Avenues in North Wildwood in 1949. Mostly with their own hands they cleared the land and built a home on it in 1950.

"We did most of the work ourselves," recalled Krueger. "We dug the trench for the forms and wired the rebar into the forms. The concrete truck came to pour the forms and we helped smooth the concrete. We built the pilings under the home and put in double what the building inspector stated was needed. We hired block masons to build the walls.

"The family installed the wall which was also double the required specs. We built and installed the roof trusses and nailed on the roof boards and shingles. I remember my mother holding a spotlight in each hand, standing on the roof at 10 p.m. while dad, Bill, Ron and I nailed the shingles."
