A Balanced Prayer

歴代誌下 20:5-12

5 ヨシャパテは、主の宮の新しい庭の前にあるユダとエルサレムの会衆の中に立って、

6 言った。「主よ、私たちの先祖の神よ。あなたは天の神ではありませんか。諸国の国々のすべてを支配しておられるではありませんか。力と権威はあなたの手の中にあります。あなたに立ち向かう者は誰もいません。

7 私たちの神よ、あなたはこの地の住民をあなたの民イスラエルの前から追い払い、あなたの友アブラハムの子孫に永遠に与えたではありませんか。

8 彼らはそこに住み、あなたの御名のためにそこに聖所を建て、こう言いました。

2 Chronicles 20:5-12

5 Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD before the new court,

6 and he said, ``O LORD, the God of our fathers, are You not God in the heavens? And are You not ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in Your hand so that no one can stand against You.

7 ``Did You not, O our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel and give it to the descendants of Abraham Your friend forever?

8 ``They have lived in it, and have built You a sanctuary there for Your name, saying,

9 `Should evil come upon us, the sword, or judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before this house and before You (for Your name is in this house) and cry to You in our distress, and You will hear and deliver us. '

10 ``Now behold, the sons of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir, whom You did not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt (they turned aside from them and did not destroy them),

11 see how they are rewarding us by coming to drive us out from Your possession which You have given us as an inheritance.

12 ``O our God, will You not judge them? For we are powerless before this great multitude who are coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are on You."

16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;

17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

We can learn valuable lessons from the prayers in the Old Testament. When Jehoshaphat petitioned for divine help, he struck a balance between asking the Lord to meet his needs and proclaiming God’s greatness. Likewise, our requests should be made with recognition of who God is. Otherwise, the focus of our prayers can become need, weakness, failure, or fear.

ヨシャパテは神に悲惨な境遇を訴えて叫びましたが、同時に主を賛美し、イスラエルの民のために主がしてくださった偉大な御業を称えました。だからこそ、神の御言葉を知ることは非常に重要なのです（テモテへの手紙二 3:16-17）。主が他の人々の人生にどのように働かれたかを読むとき、私たちは主の驚くべき力についてより深く理解することができます。そうすれば、旧約聖書の男女を模範とし、同じように祈ることができるようになります。神の奇跡を起こす力は、今日でも私たちに与えられており、神はその子供たちがその力にあずかることを望んでおられます。

Jehoshaphat cried out to God about his terrible predicament, but he also exalted the Lord, acknowledging the great things He had done for the people of Israel. That’s why knowing the Word of God is so important (2 Timothy 3:16-17). When we read about how the Lord has worked in the lives of others, we better understand His awesome power. Then we can look to the men and women of the Old Testament as an example and begin to pray in a similar way. God’s wonder-working power is still available to us today, and He wants His children to access it.

「あなたの御手には力と権威があり、あなたに立ち向かう者は誰もいません」（歴代誌下20:6）と宣言することで、ヨシャパテは神を賛美すると同時に、主の偉大さを自らに思い起こしていました。今日、祈るとき、神の憐れみと恵みについて神に語りかけ、神の偉大な力を思い起こしましょう。

By proclaiming, “Power and might are in Your hand so that no one can stand against You” (2 Chron. 20:6), Jehoshaphat was praising God and at the same time reminding himself of the Lord’s greatness. As you pray today, speak to God of His mercy, talk to Him about His grace, and recall His mighty power.
