The Importance of Baptism

私たちがキリストに従って水に入り洗礼を受けるとき、私たちはキリストへの忠誠を公に宣言するのです。

When we follow Christ into the water to be baptized, we publicly proclaim our allegiance to Him.

マタイ 3:14-17 NIV [14] しかしヨハネは彼を思いとどまらせようとして言った。「私はあなたからバプテスマを受けるべきなのに、あなたは私のところに来るのですか。」 [15] イエスは答えた。「今はそうさせてください。すべての正義を成就するために、私たちがそうするのは当然です。」 するとヨハネは同意した。 [16] イエスはバプテスマを受けるとすぐに水から上がった。そのとき天が開け、神の霊が鳩のように降りてきて自分の上にとどまるのをイエスは見た。 [17] すると天から声がした。「これはわたしの愛する子、わたしは彼を喜ぶ。」

子どもの頃を思い出してください。尊敬していた年上の人を真似したことを覚えていますか。子どもが尊敬する人の癖や話し方、考え方を真似するのはよくあることですが、やがて、こうした行動をやめてしまう子も少なくありません。しかし、神の子である私たちは、イエスに倣い、イエスと密接に一体となることを決してやめるべきではありません。イエスの模範に従う方法の一つは、洗礼を受けることです。

Think back to when you were a child. Do you remember imitating an older person you looked up to? It’s common for children to adopt mannerisms, speech patterns, and ideas of people they admire, but in time, many outgrow these behaviors. We, however, as children of God, are never to stop emulating and being closely identified with Jesus. And one way we follow His example is through baptism.

マタイ 28 章で、イエスは弟子たちにこう言っています。「行って、すべての国の人々を弟子としなさい。彼らに父と子と聖霊の名によってバプテスマを施しなさい。」（マタイ 28:19）公の宣教活動の初めに、イエスはバプテスマを受けることを選ばれました。バプテスマのヨハネは人々に罪を告白して悔い改めるよう呼びかけ、その決意の表れとしてヨルダン川に浸かるよう呼びかけていました。罪のないイエスは川のそばで群衆に加わり、ヨハネにバプテスマを施すよう求めました。バプテスマの水の中でイエスの模範に従うことで、私たちは救い主への信仰を公に告白し、自分たちをイエスと同一視しているのです。

In Matthew 28, Jesus tells His disciples: “Go ... and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). At the beginning of His public ministry, Jesus chose to be baptized. John the Baptist was calling the people to confess their sins and repent—and then to be immersed in the Jordan River as an outward sign of that decision. Jesus, the One who had no sin, joined the crowd at the river and asked John to baptize Him. By following His example in the waters of baptism, we are publicly confessing our faith in the Savior and identifying ourselves with Him.

救いには洗礼は必要ではなく、主への信仰だけが必要であることを覚えておくことが重要です。しかし、洗礼を通して、私たちはイエスとキリストの兄弟姉妹とのつながりを示します。私たちは皆、イエスの足跡をたどる一つの体の一員なのです。

It’s important to remember that baptism isn’t required for salvation—only faith in the Lord is. But through baptism, we demonstrate our connection with Jesus and our brothers and sisters in Christ. We are all members of one body, following in His footsteps.
