stovepiping とは、情報を単独に得ること

 

 こんにちは！

前回の続きですが、同じ、FOXニュースのボストン・マラソン爆破テロ事件の容疑者の兄のほうに関する疑惑についての専門家へのインタビューの中で、

stovepipe　という言葉が使われていました。

次のように言っていました。

 But, there's this worry is  he stovepipes and they don't communicate with each other ----

（訳：　でも、彼は単独で情報を得ていて、ほかの人とのコミュニケーションをとっていないという可能性もあるわけです）

 最初はstovepipes　の単語が聞き取れなかったのですが、何度か聞いて、stovepipeだと分かりました。

辞書を調べてもわかりません。

Stovepiping 

として、次の説明がありました。

「接続していないデータベースからの情報の検索」

文字通りの意味は、ストーブの煙突という意味なのですが、そこから、単独で

他とは関係なく煙を出しているっていう感じなのでしょうか。

オンラインの英語の辞書では次のように定義していました。

Definition(s):

• (n) retrieval of information from unconnected databases; the situation that exists when it is necessary to climb out of one database in order to climb down into another; sometimes used for protection against wandering hacker

また、ウィキペディアの説明は次のとおりでした。

 

Stovepiping is a metaphorical term which recalls a stovepipe's function as an isolated vertical conduit, and has been used, in the context of intelligence, to describe several ways in which raw intelligence information may be presented without proper context. The lack of context may be due to the specialized nature, or security requirements, of a particular intelligence collection technology. Alternatively, the lack of context may come from a particular group, in the national policy structure, selectively presenting only that information that supports certain conclusions.

Usage(s):

• Are we supposed to forget about Cheney, Rummy, Feith, and Wolfowitz and "stovepiping"?.
