Cabinet chief gets knife threat from HK

BARCLAY CRAWFORD and REUTERS

The man tipped to become Japan's next prime minister claims he has received a death threat from Hong Kong.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe said the letter, which contained a knife, claimed he would be killed if he continued visiting a controversial shrine to the nation's war dead.

The visits to the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo by Japanese politicians including Mr Abe and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi have provoked fury
in China and South Korea because among the 2.5 million honoured there are convicted war criminals.

Seoul and Beijing blame the repeated visits for straining diplomatic relations with Japan.

Albert Ho Chun-yan, a Democratic Party legislator and chairman of the Hong Kong Coalition for Preserving the History of the Second World War, suggested Mr Abe disclosed the receipt of the letter for political purposes.

Mr Ho said the disclosure risked inflaming an already tense situation.

"This was probably an isolated, irrational incident," he said. "All politicians receive these threats every day, even me, and they don't choose to make them public. Why has he chosen to do this now?"

Mr Ho condemned the threat of violence and said the perpetrator should be brought to justice.

But he said the shrine visits were something many people in Hong Kong felt strongly about.

Mr Ho added: "There are extreme people who I meet all the time who think we are not taking tough enough action."

A spokeswoman for the Japanese Consul-General in Hong Kong, Akiko Tejima, said the consulate had been unaware of the death threat.

"We haven't been given any instructions to investigate the matter," she said.

It could not be established last night whether Hong Kong police had been told to investigate the threat. Mr Abe said he had reported the matter to police.

"Such a threat would not influence my thoughts or actions in any way," he said.

The cabinet secretary is known for his tough stance towards China and North Korea and has defended Mr Koizumi's visits to the shrine.
