白駒の池（しらこまのいけ）または白駒池（しらこまいけ）は、長野県南佐久郡佐久穂町と小海町との境にある池です。 山梨県から長野県にそびえている八ヶ岳連峰、北八ヶ岳の標高2,115メートルの地点に位置し、白駒峰の噴火により大石川がせき止められて誕生した堰止湖です。 

池の大きさは面積0.11平方キロメートル、周囲長1.35キロメートルです。 国道299号線（通称・メルヘン街道）の頂上となっている麦草峠まで車でアプローチできるため、道のりもゆるやかで、登山初心者でも気軽にトレッキングを楽しめます。

 白駒の池の魅力は、知る人ぞ知る「苔の森（こけのもり」で450種類もの苔が生えていると言われ、神秘的な森が形成されています。 苔が生えているのは一部ではなく、広範囲に渡って生えており、足元に広がるコケ以外に、木に生息するコケ、倒れた木にしか生息しないコケなど、大きさも形もコケの種類はさまざまで、今まで見てきたコケのイメージが、大きく変わるかもしれません。 

また、種類の異なったコケを見ることができるポイントが10箇所もあり、それぞれ違う森の名前がつけられています。例えば、白駒の池 駐車場から一番近い森は「白駒の森」と呼ばれ、見応えのある原生林が生い茂っていたり、樹木に付くコケがたくさん生息しています。

他にも「黒曜の森」と呼ばれる森は、風鈴のように垂れ下がった胞子体の珍しいコケを見ることができます。1番のオススメスポットは「もののけの森」で、まるでジブリ(もののけ姫)の世界のような景色が広がっています。 

苔の森では、年に数回、コケのプロフェッショナルによる「観察会」が行われています。観察会では、白駒池周辺にある山小屋主人の案内に加え、コケに精通した方々によるユニークなコケの解説を聞きながら、チームに分かれてコケを観察していく貴重な体験も出来るそうです。 

ベストシーズンは毎年５月下旬に開催される「苔の森開き」が行われた後で6月〜9月です。真夏でも気温20℃前後と、とっても過ごしやすくて快適な場所です。 また、9月下旬～10月中旬は紅葉シーズンに入るので、鮮やかな紅葉と苔の森を合わせて楽しむことができます。 

毎年11月中旬から翌年4月中旬の間は雪が多く、苔の森へ繋がる国道299号が一旦通行止めになります。 

都心から車で約3時間ですが、気軽に行けて都会の喧騒を忘れられる「苔の森」で、足元に広がる圧巻のコケの世界を楽しみましょう！！ 

Shirakoma no Ike or Shirakoma no Ike is a pond located on the border between Sakuho Town, Minamisaku District, Nagano Prefecture and Koumi Town. Located at an altitude of 2,115 meters above sea level in the Yatsugatake mountain range, which rises from Yamanashi prefecture to Nagano prefecture, it is a dammed lake created by the eruption of Shirakoma peak, which dammed the Oishi River. 

The size of the pond is 0.11 square kilometers in area and 1.35 kilometers in circumference. Since you can approach the Mugisou Pass, which is the top of National Highway 299 (commonly known as the Fairy Tale Road), by car, the road is gentle and even beginners can easily enjoy trekking. 

The charm of Shirakoma no Ike is that it is said that 450 kinds of moss grow in the "moss forest" known to those in the know, and a mysterious forest is formed.

 Moss grows not only in a part but over a wide area, and in addition to the moss that spreads at the feet, moss that inhabits trees, moss that inhabits only fallen trees, etc. 

There are various types, and the image of moss that you have seen may change significantly. In addition, there are 10 points where you can see different types of moss, each with a different forest name. For example, the forest closest to the Shirakomaike parking lot is called "Shirakoma no Mori", and there are many spectacular virgin forests and many moss on the trees. In addition, in the forest called "Kuroyo no Mori", you can see rare moss of sporophytes that hang down like wind chimes. 

The most recommended spot is "Mononoke no Mori", where you can see the scenery like the world of Ghibli (Princess Mononoke). The best season is from June to September after the "Moss Forest Opening" held in late May every year. Even in the middle of summer, the temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius, making it a very comfortable and comfortable place to spend. Also, since the autumn leaves season starts from late September to mid-October, you can enjoy the vivid autumn leaves and the moss forest together. Every year from mid-November to mid-April the following year, there is a lot of snow, and National Highway 299, which connects to the Moss Forest, is temporarily closed. 

It's about 3 hours drive from the city center, but let's enjoy the world of moss that spreads out at your feet in the "moss forest" where you can easily go and forget about the hustle and bustle of the city! !!
