龍泉寺（りゅうせんじ）は、岡山市北区下足守に位置するお寺で、奈良時代に山岳修行をしていた報恩大師が創建したと伝えられています。この地は、磐座信仰の霊地であり、龍神を雨乞いの神・水の神として信仰する民間信仰の霊場でもあります。現在の龍泉寺は、明治初期に中興開山の祖である承進院日護聖人によって再興大成され、日蓮宗最上教派の本山になりました。龍泉寺の境内には、最上位経王大菩薩や八大龍王、鬼子母神、三面大黒天などを祭っています。
また、龍泉寺には龍王池があり、古代祭祀跡の巨石も残されています。楽々森舎人が芦守山の水をわき出させたという伝説があり、楽々森舎人は桃太郎伝説の猿のモデルとされています。
龍泉寺は、最上稲荷から北へ10分ほど車で行くことができます。
Ryusenji Temple is located in Shimotsumura, Kita-ku, Okayama City. It is said to have been founded by Houon Daishi, who was engaged in mountain asceticism in this area during the Nara period (749-757) of the Tenpyou era. It was a sacred site for the ancient Iwakura faith, and it was also the place where Houon Daishi, who had mastered Shugendo, engaged in mountain asceticism. It is a sacred place of folk religion where people worship the dragon god as a god of rain and water and Inari as a god of agriculture and bountiful harvests. The present Ryusenji Temple was reconstructed and completed in the early Meiji period by Jigyo-in Nigyo Saint (died at the age of 88 in 1905), who was the founder of the temple. Many lower-ranking samurai who had lost their jobs in the Meiji Restoration gathered under Nigyo Saint and shared their faith and life. Many of the surviving stone walls and buildings were built at that time. The temple was renamed "Saikou Honzan Otaki Ryusenji" when it inherited the name "Daikusan Ryusenji" in 1889, and became the main temple of the Saigo sect of Nichiren Buddhism in 1951. It celebrates the Saikou Kei-ou Daibosatsu (the highest sutra-king bodhisattva), the eight great dragon kings (water gods), the oni-kishi mother goddess (a guardian deity of children), and the three-faced Daikokuten.
At Ryusenji Temple, the dragon king pond is celebrated as the divine body of the eight great dragon kings. The name of the dragon king pond goes back to the time of Emperor Jimmu (around 200 BC). The origin of the dragon king pond and Ryuo Mountain is described in the Kinjo Engi, which was transcribed in the Heian period.
Sasamori Tone, who was the war commissioner of Prince Kibitsuhiko, had supernatural powers and drilled into the rocks at the summit of Ashimori Mountain to bring forth water, which moisturized the local people. The spring water became a pond halfway up the mountain.
Afterwards, the dragon god Ubatsumara came flying to Ashimori Mountain and protected the local people, so the mountain came to be called Ryuo Mountain and the pond became known as the Dragon King Pond.
This legend tells us that this area has been a sacred site of faith since ancient times. The precincts of Ryusenji Temple still contain ancient ritual stone monuments. Sasamori Tone is said to have been the model for the monkey in the Momotaro legend.
The "Saikou Honzan Otaki Ryusenji" is located close to the Ashimori district preservation area in Kita-ku, Okayama City, and is said to have been founded by Houon Daishi who underwent training in this natural and abundant location within the Okayama Prefectural Nature Park during the Nara period. If you go north from the Saikou Inari Shrine for about 10 minutes by car, you will reach Ryusenji Temple.
In 1951, it became the main temple of the Saigo sect of Nichiren Buddhism, celebrating the Saikou Kei-ou Daibosatsu, the eight great dragon kings, the oni-kishi mother goddess, and the three-faced Daikokuten.
