なぜ、こう訳されているのかを考える。

冠詞、指示語などの英米差

村上春樹の作品の英語版において、アメリカ版とイギリス版で異なる場合がある。基本的には、英訳者はアメリカ人なので、イギリス版において、イギリス版の編集者によって、書き換えが行われているものと推察される。
 英語の英米差については、例えば、elevatorとliftなど、事物を指す名詞が異なることはよく知られている。しかし、本項では、冠詞や指示代名詞などにおいても、書き換えが行われている場合を例示する。以下は単なる資料、である。考察はない。
 それぞれの項の、上の英文がアメリカ版で、下がイギリス版で、その下に原文を付す。原文末尾に『国』とあるのは『国境の南、太陽の西』、『恋』とあるのは『スプートニクの恋人』の略号である。

(1)定冠詞か不定冠詞か
