Dali When we ride a train―especially in my case, a subway―we hear announcements. The main purpose of the announcements is to tell us the next station. If I am absorbed in reading a book, this is very helpful.
ダリちゃん 電車、特にわしの場合は地下鉄に乗った時、アナウンスがあるね。その主な目的は次の駅を知らせることだ。読書に没頭してる時なんか大変役に立つ。

Dali When I first came to Japan, many years ago, I couldn’t understand any Japanese at all. Also the announcements on the train were 100% Japanese. Do you think this was a problem for me? Tell me!

In those days, when I rode the train, I would hear something like, “◎△＄♪×￥●＆％＃☆Nihombashi, Nihombashi….” At the next stop, the doors open, and the announcement again, “Nihombashi, Nihombashi.” So although I could not at all understand Japanese, I could hear clearly the station names. So I was never at a loss.
ダリちゃん まさか！ 当時わしが電車に乗った時、よく「◎△＄♪×￥●＆％＃☆日本橋、日本橋……」と言うようなアナウンスが聞こえた。次の駅でドアが開いて「日本橋、日本橋」と再びアナウンス。だから、わしはまったく日本語が理解できなかったが、駅名だけははっきりと聞き取ることができた。だから全然、迷子にはならなかった。

Dali Several years later, they added English translations to the announcements. But the point I want to make here is that we don’t need English, even if we don’t understand Japanese.
ダリちゃん それから何年も経って、英語でのアナウンスが追加されたんだ。でも、わしがここではっきりさせたいのは、わしらがたとえ日本語がわからなくても英語のアナウンスはいらないってことなんだ。

Dali In the train, we hear the Japanese announcement, followed by an English translation. And the English is usually shorter. It doesn’t tell us to give up priority seats to old people, for example. We don’t need the English, because the next station is clear from the Japanese announcements, even if we don’t understand Japanese. They repeat the station names again and again.
ダリちゃん 電車では、日本語のアナウンスが流れて、次に英語のアナウンスが続く。で、英語の方はたいがい短い。たとえば「お年寄りに席を譲りましょう」などとは言わない。わしらは英語なんかいらない。たとえ日本語がわからなくても日本語のアナウンスから次の駅は明らかなんだから。駅名を何度も何度も繰り返すんだから。

Dali More years have passed and now, another addition came. They have now created station numbers. For example, on the Tozai line, there is T10, which is the number for Nihombashi. If you were to listen to the announcement in English, you would hear, “The next station is Nihombashi, station number T10.” What is interesting is that the Japanese announcement says, “Tsugiwa Nihombashi, Nihombashi-desu.” They never mention the station number! So the station numbers must be intended only for us gaijins!
ダリちゃん さらに何年か経った現在、もう一つ追加されたことがある。今度は「駅ナンバー」が作られたんだ。たとえば東西線ではT10というのがあって、これは日本橋を表すナンバーなんだ。英語のアナウンスをよく聞くと「次の駅は日本橋です。駅ナンバーはT10です」と言ってるよ。面白いことにね日本語のアナウンスでは「次は日本橋、日本橋です」としか言ってないんだ。駅ナンバーに言及していないんだ！ だから駅ナンバーはわしら外国人のみを対象にしているとしか考えられない。

ダリちゃん わしらは相当馬鹿だと思われてるんだ！

Dali Do you think we are that stupid? No! First of all, we don’t even need the English. And second, we definitely don’t need the station numbers! It’s just insulting.
ダリちゃん わしらはそんなに馬鹿だと思う？ そんなことないよ！ 第一に、英語のアナウンスはまったく必要じゃない。で、第二点。駅ナンバーは絶対必要ないよ！ ほんと馬鹿にしてるよ。
