Me Last time, you mentioned the popular American cartoon, The Simpsons, when we talked about the pig idiom, “When Pigs Fly.” After that, I watched a few episodes on the Internet. However, it rather depressed me because it was often difficult to understand what was being said.
私 この前ね、豚にまつわるイディオムのwhen pigs flyの話で、ダリちゃんはアメリカの人気漫画「ザ・シンプソンズ」のことについて言ってたでしょう。あとで僕はネットでいくつかのエピソードを見たんだよ。でも何言ってるか理解しづらい箇所がいくつもあってかなり落ち込んじゃった。
Dali Oh, I also sometimes have a hard time to catch what’s being said on The Simpsons.
ダリちゃん そうだね、わしも「ザ・シンプソンズ」で何言っているかわかりづらいことが時々ある。

私 えー、そうなの？ そう言ってくれると安心する。
Dali I think it should be relieving because, if a native person cannot understand, of course a non-native person cannot either. In fact, I have a collection of Simpsons videos on my laptop computer. I have thousands of them. Every day, at my workplace, I usually spend many hours, eating snacks and drinking coffee. When I’m tired of preparing a lesson, I would turn on The Simpsons. I did it today too. Actually, I watched different episodes of The Simpsons for three consecutive days!
ダリちゃん ネイティブがわからなければもちろんネイティブじゃない人はわかる訳ないので安心する気持ちはわかるよ。実はね、わしのラップトップコンピューターに「ザ・シンプソンズ」の動画コレクションが入っているんだ。何千とあるよ。毎日職場でわしはいつもスナック菓子を食べながらコーヒーを飲んで何時間も過ごしているんだ。レッスンの準備に飽きた時「ザ・シンプソンズ」をつけるんだ。今日もそうした。あのね、3日連続で「ザ・シンプソンズ」の色々なエピソードを見た。

Dali Yes! Today, in one video clip, Marge Simpson (the main character’s wife) said something I did not understand. But it was clear that it was related to some kind of joke. So, I stopped it, rewound it, and watched it again. Still, I could not catch what she said. So, I rewound it once again, turned on subtitles, and played it. Now, I did understand what she said. I yelled, “Oh, that’s what she said!”
ダリちゃん その通り！ 今日はね、あるビデオクリップで、マージ・シンプソン（主役の奥さん）が何か言っていたんだけど、わしはわからなかった。何かジョークを言っているのは確かなんだけどね。それでわしは動画を一時停止して、巻き戻して、もう一度見たんだ。それでも言っていることがわからなかった。それで、もう一度巻き戻して字幕をオンにして再生したんだ。それでやっと彼女が言ったことがわかった。わしは「そうだったのか！」と叫んでしまった。

really! It may be due to the character’s weird or muffled voice, or a fast
speech. I wonder why such a cartoon can be so popular despite the fact that
even natives cannot always understand it.
私 へー、そうなの！ キャラクターが変な声を出したり、声がこもっていたり、喋るのが速すぎるからなんじゃない。ネイティブでさえわからないことがあるのに、なんでそんな漫画がそんなに人気なのかなあ？
Dali Sometimes, I don’t understand what they say, but I still understand 95 percent of it. I think most native speakers can understand most of it.
ダリちゃん 時々キャラクターの言っていることがわからないことがあるけど、それでも95％は理解できるよ。ほとんどのネイティブはほとんど理解できるんじゃない？

Dali While rewinding and stopping the video clip, I discovered another funny aspect of the cartoon. So often, scenes lapse so fast that I cannot notice the visual details. But, when I stop it, and see the shops, firms, or buildings on the street, I find that some of the signs are very funny! If it were 20-30 years ago when most people could not see The Simpsons on a computer, it would be almost impossible to enjoy this kind of fun.
ダリちゃん ビデオクリップを巻き戻したり、停止したりしているうち、その漫画のもう一つの面白い側面を発見したんだ。いつもあまりに速くシーンが進むので画面の細部には気づけない。でも停止させて通りの店や会社やビルを見ると、いくつかの看板がとても面白いことに気づく。20－30年前でほとんどの人が「ザ・シンプソンズ」をPCで見れなかった頃だったら、この種の面白みを味わうことはほぼ不可能だっただろうね。

I think that The Simpsons is funny for both
children and adults. Even a small child enjoys it by just watching the video
clip without always understanding the contents of conversation. Adults may
enjoy the wit of conversation, hidden background humor, or jokes. They also
enjoy, by rewinding the video clip and scrutinizing the details of cityscapes, a
lot of hilarious signs.
「ザ・シンプソンズ」は大人も子供も楽しめると思う。会話の中身が必ずしもわからなくても、ただビデオクリップを見るだけで、小さな子供でさえ楽しめる。大人は会話のウイットや隠れたユーモアや冗談を楽しむ。大人はまたビデオクリップを巻き戻して都市の景観の細部の描写をじっくり観察して、面白い看板をたくさん見つけたりして楽しめる。
