Dali His name is Tarou. He is a Shiba dog. Since childhood,
I’ve had many dogs. When I was a child, we had some German shepherds. German
shepherds are very good dogs, very protective, and very intelligent. But Tarou
is the most intelligent dog I have ever met.
ダリちゃん タロウだよ。柴犬の。子供の頃からたくさんの犬を飼ってきたけど。子供の頃ジャーマンシェパードを飼っていたけど、とってもいい犬でね、いい番犬でね、とてもお利口さん。でもタロウはわしが出会った中で一番お利口。

Dali Tarou communicates with me just looking at my face. I can understand exactly what he’s feeling by the expression on his face, the shape of his eyes, and the length of his stare…. I can clearly understand whether he is happy, angry, or impatient about something. He also understands human vocabulary to a very high extent, in both English and Japanese.
ダリちゃん タロウはわしの顔を見るだけでコミュニケーションが取れる。わしは彼の顔の表情や、目の形、見つめる時間で何を感じているかわかる。嬉しいのか、怒ってるのか、何かにやきもきしているのか、はっきりわかる。彼はまた英語でも日本語でも、人間の言葉がほんとよくわかっている。

Dali Yes. We go on a walk twice a day. He loves going for a walk. When I tell Tarou it’s time for his walk, there are several English or Japanese expressions he understands. For example, I might say, “Tarou, osanpo.” Or I can say to him, “Tarou, it’s time.” Alternatively, when I
am working, I might look at him and say, “Let’s go!” As he hears me, he gets
excited and dashes to the door. So, he understands several different expressions
that mean “go for a walk.”
ダリちゃん そう。わしらは日に2回散歩に行く。彼は散歩が好きだ。タロウに散歩の時間だよと言う時、彼が理解できるいくつかの英語や日本語の表現がある。例えば、「タロウ、お散歩」や「タロウ、イッツ、タイム」など。あるいは、わしが仕事をしている時、彼を見つめて「レッツゴー」と言うかも。わしの声を聴くと、彼は興奮してドアのところまでダッシュする。だから彼は「散歩に行く」というという意味のいくつかの表現が理解できる。
Me Wow, he understands English and Japanese. Does he eat well?

Dali Yes, he loves eating. I make his food myself. I don’t like to give him dog food because I don’t know what’s in it. Although ingredients are listed on the bag, saying that it contains pork, beef, or chicken, etc., I don’t know exactly what part of the animal was used. There is another reason why I don’t want to give dog food to Tarou. Imagine a situation in a dog food factory, where some pieces of meat fall on the floor and the worker picks it up. If it’s a factory making human food, he washes it maybe or throws it away. But, in case of a dog food factory, he may think something like, “No problem. No need to wash. It’s only for dogs.” I truly think this is likely what would happen.
ダリちゃん そう。彼は食べることが好き。わしが自ら彼の食事を作るんだ。ドックフードはやりたくないね。だって何が入っているかわからないもん。袋に、豚肉、牛肉、鶏肉などと成分は書いてあるけど、実際どこの肉かわからないもんね。タロウにドックフードをやりたくないもう一つの理由がある。ドックフード工場の場面を想像してみよう。床に肉の一部が落ちて、工員が拾うとする。もし、人間の食べ物を作っている工場なら、おそらく洗うか廃棄するだろうけれど、ドッグフード工場の場合は、その工員は「問題ない。洗う必要なし。犬のだから」などと思うかも。わしはこういう事がほんと起こりうると思う。

私 そうだろうね。どのみち、食べるのは犬だからね。
Dali That’s why I buy all the ingredients for Tarou’s food. I buy all kinds of vegetables and chicken, cut them up, steam them, and finally freeze it. I make meals for two weeks at a time. I believe this has helped very much to keep him as healthy as possible.
ダリちゃん だからね、タロウの餌のすべての原材料はわしが買うんだ。いろいろな野菜や鶏肉を買ってきて、切り刻んで、蒸して、最後に冷凍するんだ。一度に2週間分作るんだ。こうすることで彼がとっても健康にいられるんだと信じている。

私 何でそう思うの？
Dali He is now quite advanced in age. When people
ask me how old Tarou is, I reply that he is twelve years old. Nobody can
believe that he’s already twelve. With aging, many dogs will have tearing from
their eyes, which, I think, is caused by additives, chemical flavorings, or
preservatives in the dog food. But Tarou has none of this. I think this is
because his food is made fresh without additives or flavorings. The meal is
frozen and is consumed within two weeks. Tarou is healthy and eats anything eagerly.
He eats even just simple raw vegetables with such happiness. I never give him
unhealthy things. Everything is prepared by me, using carefully-selected fresh
ingredients. I’ve been preparing it for his entire life of twelve years, and will
continue doing it for the rest of his life. I really think it has had a very beneficial
effect on his health. I believe he will live much longer and more healthily than
the average dog.
ダリちゃん 彼は今ではもう年だ。「タロウはおいくつ？」と他人に聞かれると12歳だと答える。もう12歳だと誰も信じないけどね。年を取ると多くの犬は目に涙をつけるようになる。これはドックフードに含まれる添加物や人工香料や保存剤が原因と思うんだ。でも、タロウは目に涙なんか付いていない。彼の餌が添加物や香料無しで、作りたてだからだと思うんだ。餌は冷凍して2週間以内に消費するんだ。タロウは健康で何でもパクパク食べる。ただの生野菜でさえもとっても喜んで食べる。わしは彼に不健康なものは絶対やらない。厳選した新鮮な原材料を使って、全てわしが調理する。12年間ずっとしてきたし、これからもずっとそうする。彼の健康にとってもいい影響を与えていると本当に思っている。平均的な犬と比べてずっと健康で、長生きしてくれると信じている。

Although Dali is stubborn, arrogant, and
doesn’t try to listen to what anyone says, here he has a good point. He loves
Tarou very much. People who love dogs can’t be anything but good. I bet Dali
loves Tarou more than Reiko, his wife.
