Dali When I first came to Japan, I made a shocking observation. Japanese people are very loving towards their cars! They spend a lot of time washing their cars. So Japanese cars are often beautiful and shiny.
ダリちゃん わしが日本に初めて来た時、見てショックを受けたことがあったんだ。日本人はとても自分の車を愛しているという事！ 自分の車を洗うのに多くの時間を割くという事。で、日本の車はしばしばきれいでピカピカだ。

Dali But it’s very strange elsewhere! In the US, when somebody buys a new car, initially he is proud of it and washes it often. But after three or four years, it becomes a bit old, and the enjoyment goes down. At that time, the car becomes just a form of transportation. Having said that, cars are expensive vehicles. So he takes care of the car mechanically, but not so much cosmetically. He tries to keep the car for 5 to 7 years or more. Most Americans keep the car much longer than Japanese people.
ダリちゃん でもよその国じゃとても変！ アメリカでは新車を買って最初のうちは自慢して洗車もよくする。でも3、4年も経つと少しばかり古くなり楽しみも薄れてく。その時には車は単なる移動手段となる。そうは言うものの、車は高価な乗り物なので車の動力源には気を使うが、外観にはそんなに気を使わない。オーナーは5～7年あるいはそれ以上、車を長持ちさせようとする。ほとんどのアメリカ人は日本人よりずっと長い間、車を保有する。

Dali What’s a waste! Anyway, in Japan, cars are like a hobby. They’re not just transportation. Japanese people look at a personal car as something very precious and valuable. They don’t want to have an old car since it looks bad. Given this, they will sell it and get a new one after only a very short time.
ダリちゃん なんて無駄なことを！ とにかく日本では車は趣味みたいなものだ。単なる移動手段じゃない。日本人は個人の車を何かとても貴重で大切なものとして見ているようだ。彼らは古い車は見栄えが悪いので欲しがらない。だから彼らは非常に短期間の間に、古い車を売って新しい車を買うんだろうね。

Dali Americans don’t care much about the bad appearance of a car. If the car runs well, appearance isn’t so important. Even if the car has a minor glitch, if it still runs, often the American would not fix the car.
ダリちゃん アメリカ人は車の見た目が悪くてもあまり気にしない。ちゃんと走りさえすれば、見た目はあまり重要ではない。たとえちょっとした不具合があっても、走りさえすれば、アメリカ人は車を修理しないことはよくある。

Dali So, Americans treat cars as commodities and do not take much care in the appearance of their cars, whereas the Japanese treat cars like a hobby and look at them as something precious.

Dali But, the opposite is true of a bicycle. For the Japanese, bicycles are treated like a transportation commodity. There are so many ugly old bicycles, which are in bad condition in Japan. Some obahans (middle-aged women) ride noisy bicycles. But in the US, bicycles are usually treated as a hobby. Many American cycling enthusiasts have expensive bicycles.
ダリちゃん でも、自転車については逆のことが言える。日本人にとって自転車は移動するための生活必需品みたいなものだ。日本では、状態が悪く、見るに堪えない古い自転車があまりにも多い。ガタガタ音のする自転車に乗っている「おばはん」もいる。でもアメリカでは普通、自転車は趣味として扱われている。多くのアメリカ人の自転車愛好家は高価な自転車を持っている。

Dali In Japan, everybody has a bicycle, but not everybody has a car. In contrast, in the US, everybody has a car, but not all adults have bicycles. For Americans who are cycling enthusiasts, bicycles are not a commodity, but a means for enjoying exercise or nature.
ダリちゃん 日本では誰もが自転車を持っているけれど、誰もが車を持っているわけではない。それに対して、アメリカでは誰もが車を持っているが、すべての大人が自転車を持っているわけではない。アメリカ人の自転車の愛好家にとって、自転車は日用必需品ではなくエクササイズや自然を楽しむための手段なんだ。

I have never washed my bicycle. But I sometimes get my car washed at a gas station.
